got my first les paul

what an amazing guitar. i always wanted a gold top.

1957 VOS R7

the sustain, the clarity, the craftsmanship. i think the pickups are burstbuckers.

from what i read online this guitar is a faithful repro of the original, right down to the pickups. is that right?

the high E buzzes against the frets quite badly.

from gibson's site it says the new ones have "custom" pickups. the S/N starts with 71 so i think it comes with the A2 burstbuckers.

The buzzing could of course be down to a worn saddle or just having simply too low an action.
Anyways, congrats. Very nice looking Goldtop!

Raise the bridge on the high "E" side. But also check the neck. You may have to adjust the truss rod if it is too straight or even has a reverse bow (I do hope your neck is not twisted).

I would replace the high E string/strings before I started making adjustments. A dead string will often cause that kind of problem whereas the rest sound fine with no buzz.

If that doesn't work, then systematically go through potential problems. Nut, saddle, etc.

Beautiful first Les.

I would just raise the high E side of the bridge a little bit. If that doesn't fix it, look down the neck and see if it needs a truss adjustment. If so, after a truss adjustment you might be able to lower the bridge back down a little bit.

thanks all. i haven't told my wife about this yet. wish me luck.

good call about changing the strings. who knows how long these strings were on. the sticker says it's a 2003. the sales rep said it's a 2007.

I think that one is newer than 2007. You can check the serial with Gibson, or check with the guys over on the Les Paul Forum. They can help dare it. BTW, the guitar looks much too shiny to be VOS...I'm thinking it might be the full gloss version.

I have a real fondness for the Historics...and I'd love to have a gold top myself. So many great players have used a gold top.

Your guitar sounds like it needs a professional setup. Without having the guitar in hand, it's all speculation. Gibsons dont have the adjustability of say, a bolt-neck Fender, but they usually have a sweet spot where everything falls into place. I can tell you that one of the things that can make a Gibson "play like buttah" is having the tune-o-matic saddles filed so that the radius of the bridge saddles matches the radius of the fingerboard. Exactly. If your tech doesn't understand this; if he doesn't own a set of radius gauges...find a new tech. Seriously...it's that big a deal.

i believe it's this model. they call the finish antique gold VOS. i'm glad it doesn't have a relic finish.

+1. That Gibson Custom badge/sticker on the back of the LP started being used in 2012 I believe which means it 2012 or newer model. You will have to post on a lpforum or dig up gibsons method of determining date of manufacture though as I cant remember how to tell the year by the serial. Great guitars they are.... I have 2010 58RI VOS in all black....
