Got my Marshall 1959SLP modded for a Master Volume!

I have owned this 1959SLP for about a year now and I've only use it a hand full of times and haven't gotten the tone I have been looking for from it, and everyone told me to get an attenuator but everyone I tried coloured it way to much. So I got it modified for a Master Volume even with 8/10 people saying don't. Boy am I glad I decided to do it.



I use it with a 1960B loaded with G12-75Ts, with an overdrive this does the metal thing no problem, with fuzz hooked up it does that doomy thing better than most. Best $60 I have ever spent.

You can sure piss some guitar forums off with that setup: A MV 1959SLP *and* G12-75T's.

Since I dont play marshalls. Nothing against one but just dont own one , so I thought id ask
so is adding a MV to a marshal 1959SLP sacrilege or something to some?

and what about the g-12-75T's.. I take it purist that own marshalls dis anyone using anything other than greenbacks or similar?

I know.. stupid questions but just thought id ask... I dont have that much experience with different gear

Fender and Marshall tend to bring out a certain type of people. Namely those with a stick up their butts. Make the gear work for you.

I'm far from the "purist". Tone is all I care about. Which is why I don't like 75s. They're scooped and sterile sounding to my ears. I owned a handful of 1960A/Bs and just never cared for the tone I got out of 75s. Always replaced them with V30s and/or H30s. Never been a huge Greenback guy... but the Friedman 4x12 with Greenbacks on top and V30s on bottom is the best sounding 4x12 I've ever played through.

Btw... I have NO problem with the OP getting an MV installed on his plexi. Non-MV big iron amps are just unusable for most people. They either need a good OD pedal up front to push the amp to crunch, or an MV. That's just reality for most people. And like the OP... I'm not a huge fan of any attenuator that I've tried. The old blanket over the speakers thing is always how they sound to me.

Built a Marshall "clone". PPIMV wired in right off the bat (on back panel). You didn't say if it's pre or post but yours is installed in an input so it's reversible with no additional holes if you ever want to sell it. If it works for you, that's all that matters. I like the PPIMV in mine. Doesn't replicate cranked amp but sounds good and it's essentially out of circuit when wide open.

Yeah, the G12-75Ts is funny to throw in there also haha. makes many mad.

For what I do they sound good and the amp sounds amazing.

The only amps purists hate to see modded are minty vintage amps, where some idiot tech drilled holes in the front or back.
It destroys vintage value.

As for modern production PC board amps..... go for it. Try to at least insist that mods be reversable with no drilling additional holes. At least it retains the stock look.

As for G12-75T's....they don't suck at all. They simply have a more scooped EQ, with big tight bass, neutral mids, and crunchy highs. When they were most popular, they were often balanced out with midrangey EL-34's and JB pickups.


Most criticism comes from players that have less mids in their signal chain, outside the cab.

I have a pair of G12-75's,the earlier ones,and they sound awesome,huge tight bottom end and so on.

The funny thing about speakers, which differs from everything besides wood and wine, is that wear and age makes them better.

I've heard a lot of new and old G-75's, and old ones really sound good.
