Got My SG today!!

Woke up to the Fed Ex guy knocking at my door. I think at long last I have found the guitar for me in a Gibson SG (thanks jlpineda). It's my first mahogany 24.75" scale. I'm totally diggin' it. I've always have 25.5" scale gutiars so it took a few minutes to adjust. It is the one pickup SG-X, 500T with a coil split mini switch, Ebony color. I plan on my first attempt at a refinish with this guitar, add a pickguard, MOP headstock overlay, change the pots (sounds like they might be 300K), and maybe locking tuners. I switch out the "top hat" knobs for some metal knurled ones already. The neck not as bulky as I remembered (it's been a while since I've accually played one), and the slim body fits me like a glove. The 500T sounds killer though my DS-1, kind of muddy when clean. I guess that's why they put in the coil split. Well, I'm gonna go play.

Re: Got My SG today!!

everyone seems to be gettin an SG lately... i get mine wednsday.

have you thought about what bridge pickup your going to put in it?

Re: Got My SG today!!

I don't know if I'm going to change it. I'm going to check out the pot values and see if I can brighten this pickup abit. If I did, I'd probably put my JB in there.

Re: Got My SG today!!

SGs truly rock, I really love mine. The body and playing positions are good to me, I like the TOM bridge height. You sure you want a pickguard? Why not have a cool graphic or a burst or similar on the whole body? What's wrong with the tuners?

Do post some pics if you can. If you get tired with the pickup, I think that a JB would be a good choice for a single hum SG.

Re: Got My SG today!!

It being my first attempt at a refinish job, I don't reall want to try a brust and I'm not really in to graphics. I may just go with a plain old tung oil finish. I've got to see how the neck and body match up color wise. I just think a pickguard is needed to add something to the body. It looks kind of empty right now. The tuners seem a little loose and the tightening screws don't really move. It seems to stay in tune now for the 3 hours I've had it, we'll see. I don't have the digital cam here, I'll get some pics up soon.

Are all SGs nitro? I'ts got some knicks that look like how nitro falls away, but I'm not sure.

Expect refinishing posts from me in the future...

Re: Got My SG today!!

I think that all Gibson SGs are nitro, and the epis and most copys aren't. But I can't guarantee this.

Re: Got My SG today!!

Hey bro...Gibson has not used nitro except on CS guitar for several years now...it is poly. As for the pot...it is more that likely around 300k, and IMO a JB would sound killer in that guitar! As for the re-fin I have a few bits of info that might help you...if you want them PM me and I'll get it all together for you! Good luck and if I can help let me know.

BTW...your right...single pickup guitars are very cool, and as a note for you...your Kramer is a 25 inch scale not 254.5...just 25 like dano's and PRS's!

I accually posed this question to the guys over at the EverthingSG.com forum and they all say that Gibson still uses nitro and acrylic laquers. A few lower end models like "The Paul" and such are poly as well as all Epis.

Re: Got My SG today!!

call me traditional, but i really like simple looking guitars. Nothing to fancy. a burst will look nice, but for pick guards it should be simple. Perosnally my fav color is a simply black or solid color.

POST SOME PICS!!!!! :yell: ...... We all wanna see the newest member of your gear family..... :32: :)

Re: Got My SG today!!

They make a pickguard for it, Most of the Xs I've seenm have them. I always like the '61 pickguard, I don't know if it would look weird with only one bucker.
