Re: got the Cabronita painted!!

IMG_1852.jpgIMG_1855.jpgIMG_1858.jpg thanks guys but on the way in tonight it took a drop and now I have some nice dings. after some cussing and stomping around I came to terms with it and I guess now I have a relic. I dont know any way to get the dings out because the steaming method would raise the paint and clear coats. damn damn damn

You can fill those dings with superglue or nail polish (nail polish for nitro, superglue for most others). It will take time, layer by layer, but you will be able to level the surface. (actually you fill to a level slightly higher than the surrounding area then level it down and buff it). You may or may not be able to make the marks completely invisible, but it will be a smooth surface.

Re: got the Cabronita painted!!

I wouldnt know what color to do the nail polish in since I started with red then went to gold pearl. maybe just a clear nail polish? since i used an automotive paint could i just get one of those touch up pens??

Yup, clear (superglue is clear too). you could test compatibility on your test pieces or pickup routes first to decide which is better for the job. I'd suggest setting the guitar on it's side on a chair each night with the damage facing upwards, and applying a layer of the chosen repair medium, so it can dry while you sleep. That way, you could be using the guitar during the day, and buiding up the filler layers at night until it's just above the surrounding surface, and then of course you'd fine sand and polish it back to match the rest of the finish.

Be aware that if you use superglue, once a fill layer has dried, there may be a little fine whitish residue. You can flush that clean with naptha before applying the next layer. Experimenting with test pieces will give you the best indications of which way to go.

Re: got the Cabronita painted!!

Thanks crusty I actually have a couple different pieces of wood i used to test on before going to work on the guitar. I may just leave em in it and call it mojo

Re: got the Cabronita painted!!

Oh man, that just plain sucks.

Hope the drop fill works out.

Re: got the Cabronita painted!!

IMG_1616.jpgIndeed it does suck but oddly enough when i first received this body it had a ding from UPS...so its been destiny all along. I steamed out the first ding only to end up with some more. I think someone is trying to tell me something. So, Im gonna leave em.

screw the dings, just pop the hardware and electronics in and make with the rocking out :headbang:

Re: got the Cabronita painted!!

heh, yeah, seems that body just ain't happy being smooth. Well, it will make it much less painful if you get a scratch somewhere down the track. I bet you're looking forward to assembling it now and playing it ... it sounded great in that clip you posted in another thread. And it should look fantastic too.

Re: got the Cabronita painted!!

If you are going to play that guitar in anger, it is going to end up taking a few knocks. Sheesh, that's what Teles are for.

Re: got the Cabronita painted!!

Yeah guys it broke my lil guitar playing heart at first cause I wanted it to come out all shiny and perfect but apparently this guitar had another road it wanted to jam down. I def cant wait to get to rocking. as my GF said, "the dings wont change how it sounds". She's right. ...Unless the MOJO kicks in and makes it sound even Better!! The rain kicked in today so I cant get the last couple clears on til a this weekend.

Since all this has happened Ive been trying to think of a suitable name for it. Its got that blood and gold vibe to it ,had a hard road since it landed on my doorstep, so what mojo voodoo kind of name suits that vibe?

LOVE THE GRAIN THROUGH THAT!!!!

thanks. you have to turn it certain ways to see it but the grain is def there. Overall im pretty happy with how its turning out. I decided to try my hand at fixing the dings. Here is some shots of the progress so far. Yeah Im a woman I change my mind alot. I just hated the thoughts of a ding or two :kabong: lmao Once i get it built up enough and it dries, Ill add just a bit I will knock it back a bit with some 2500 wet sandpaper then add a touch of the gold ghost over it in an attempt to blend it.

Superb. The colour reminds me of the mid 80's Contemporary Strats and Teles. I used to have a HH Tele in Burgundy Mist I think it was called...

I don't own it anymore unfortunately, and these pics make it look a little darker than it actually was, but it was a great guitar...

Re: got the Cabronita painted!!

thats really sweet! yeah, Im very picky about my guits, but that ding was destiny I suppose, so roll with it. Still gorgeous! Ive built up dings on black guits with nail polish and have used super glue too. just takes patience and lots of coats.

I had to laugh.. This line from the pearl site you posted, sounds illegal..
"25 gram bag of Gold Shimmer Pearl powder " sounds like good stuff! haha
