we had a break in the weather today and I was able to paint the Cabronita. I ended up going with Toreador Red metallic. What do you guys think? No clear coats on it yet. Just color.

Love the paint job!!

How did you make your own custom decal? And when in process did you add?
I'm painting my tele headstock. Did 2-3 coats of clear and now adding neck amber". Do you put decal on before finishing with color right before final clear coat?
Also did you sand between any coats?
Thanks. Awesome work!

Re: got the Cabronita painted!!

I put the decal on after the red and ghost pearl coats, just prior to starting the clear. I didnt sand between any coatsn with nitro the melt into the previous coat so it levels out decently. What orange peel you have will get sanded off during wet sanding

Re: got the Cabronita painted!!

Thanks!
How did you make decal? Can I make my design with a computer then print on decal paper?
I saw your decal on the guitar back and fell in love instantly. Yours just looks high class and location is great. I'm glad I opened this thread. Love the color and decal
Excuse me for dumb question(s), but wet sand is after final clear coats right?

Good work, thanks for answering my questions. Ill pay that forward one day

Re: got the Cabronita painted!!

ballgame I bought my decal from this guy on ebay. http://myworld.ebay.com/brauskoh?_trksid=p2047675.l2559
just get in touch with him and tell him what you are after and what fonts you want to use etc. He will hook you up. As to the wet sanding question, yes that is after your clear coats have dried. I used Nitro (minwax lacquer in a black can from walmart) Nitro you have to let it dry for a while (a couple weeks at least some say up to a month) before you wet sand. I used automotive wetordry sandpaper. I started with 1000 and then worked my way thru 1500,2000,2500. Some use different grades paper but I wanted to go nice and slow as to not get any sand thrus. Once you have done that you just use a nice polishing compound to rub it out to a nice shine. If you have any other questions feel free to ask. Ill try to help. Im a noob at this, Im learning as I go. Here's a good thread for you to check out.

He uses a pro set up but you can get alot of info and guidelines to go from with rattle cans as well.

Re: got the Cabronita painted!!

Thanks. That tread is great. I'm in a holding pattern as I try to figure out if I can so my own decal. Will probably just use words but will vet it out before I start clear coats.
But again love how yours is on the back! I'm only doing a head stock though

Here is my head stock. 3 coats clear, then 4 super thin neck amber. I think it's too yellow so I stopped. Next is clear

Re: got the Cabronita painted!!

Id toss your headstock decal on there and then do the clears. You can buy decal paper and print it yourself if you have the font you want to use. I was afraid Id screw mine up so I ordered it. I put it on after the amber and then put the tru oil over it til it was buried good. I didnt want to see the edges. Here's a good shot of mine. IMG_1654.jpg

Re: got the Cabronita painted!!

IMG_2054.jpgIMG_2058.jpgIMG_2029.jpg in the end I hated the color so I stripped it down and started over. last picture is before the coats of tru oil were applied. anyways, Here's the progress after 4 coats of cordovan transtint and 8 coats of tru oil

Re: got the Cabronita painted!!

You go girrrl. Very cool and impressive. Good design don't come easy..

Re: got the Cabronita painted!!

Very cool...

CAn't wait to see the finished product. That's saying a lot because I'm not even a tele fan!

Re: got the Cabronita painted!!

thanks guys. I have found for my personal guitars I really love a Natural look. this one is gonna have a Filtertron bucker in it,so its gonna kick a lil more than a normal tele. Ive put alot of hours and time into this thing. But in the end I have a feeling its gonna be worth it. I think it looks a million times better already

Re: got the Cabronita painted!!

I liked the colour you had going but that redo: dayyyum!!!!!!
Good call, looks fricken sweet !!!!

Seeing the grain really takes it to a new level.
And you could always have someone airbrush the Rosy pic on the case.

Re: got the Cabronita painted!!

that is true about having someone brush rosie on there for me. Heres a couple more shots. This after about 10 coats of tru oil.

Re: got the Cabronita painted!!

I'm really liking the look of the TrueOil finishes that I'm seeing people doing.

Question - once it cures can you polish it to a mirror gloss or will it gloss up beyond what your pics show with just burnishing ?

Re: got the Cabronita painted!!

Holy crap, that spalted maple top guitar is fricken amazing and the finish on those lap steels are out of the park!!

Thanks l/m.
