Got the Sentenet neck in with the Alt 8 Bridge today

First impressions are it does seem to have a great singing quality on solos with gain. However it was a lot hotter than i expected and than the clips showed. The info stated it was in between a Jazz and a 59 neck in both tone and output but it's not. It has a lot more meat in the bottom that the tone chart and the output is much higher than it appeared to be by at that DC resistance listed and the description. Also does not seem so far to split very well. Will reserve further judgment until I get it in a band mix and also get it through my Mesa at Church. What I was shooting for was a bigger sounding fatter meaner and tighter JB/Jazz set up so will I get there with his set up and a few tweaks?? Keep you posted!

Interesting- that wasn't my experience, but I'd love to know how this works out with your tweaks.

Was surprised when I got the pickup in that it was so hot for one and yet was so weak and thin sounding when it was tapped. Will hopefully take the guitar to band practice tonight so I can get it into a real world situation in a band mix. It does match the Alt in the bridge much better than the Carvin tone and output wise though so was a step in the right direction.
I expected to see more sweet smooth and articulate than I am getting so far with this pickup and that's for sure. Still working with the height of both pickups and trying to balance this combo in tone and output so will keep you posted. One thing I have found is the Sentient seems extremely responsive to height to strings. It changes quite dramatically in particular on bottom end response with even slight adjustments in this guitar so maybe I just have not found that sweet spot yet.
What sold me on the pickup in particular was this video demo. In particular the clean tones through the JCM 2000 DSL and the blues tone through that Cornford in the front. Martin Kidd the designer of that Cornford also voiced my Jet City JCA 22H Custom head so expected to get close to this with my rig. Still working with it so we shall see. Am getting the fluid high gain solo tones though.

Do have one question here though for you guys at Duncan. Why did you wire this pickup from the upper side of the pickup on a right hand guitar with the logo facing the right way? Strange to have to run the lead all the way under the pickup like I did to get to the hole to the control cavity. Not a problem but was just odd I thought so??

I have a sentiment in my 7 String. Admittedly I don’t play that guitar all that often but I think it sounds pretty damn good.
I’m considering habing a custom Charve style guitar made and I was considering a Custom Custom paired with a Sentinent...
Maybe you just need to tweak the height like you mentioned.

Finally getting it dialed in. REALLY digging the combo of the Alt in the bridge and the Sentient in the neck on this guitar with the KOA. Seems to be a very good tonal and output match now that it's all dialed in. Super versatile set up that will clean up and get sweet with a roll back then rip like crazy when you roll on. Tapped tones also match well and tapped together is nice and glassy once I really got the heights figured out and found the sweet spot on both pickups. Both these pickups are quite dynamic and also very sensitive to adjustments on height to the strings so took a while to really get it all dialed in. In particular the solo tones are fantastic and offer a ton of dynamics and fluid tones.
Cant imagine a better pickup pairing in this guitar now!!

I've seen this on a few pickups, not just this one.

Re: Got the Sentenet neck in with the Alt 8 Bridge today

Was it just a height issue, @Ascension?

Getting the sweet spot on the heights with not just the Sentient but the Alt where they were working together was the trick. The Sentient showed some dramatic changes in low end response in particular with height adjustments. Got a lot warmer at a certain point to the strings in a narrow window like maybe with in a 1/2 turn of the adjustment screw or so. Finding the sweet spot for it then working the Alt around it was the trick. May be also the solid KOA but this one took some tweaking to get it where it needed to be. Really pleased so far with it for now but yet to get it into a full live band situation.

Could be the Koa. My 356 with a koa top has a huge low end punch when compared to its maple topped 356 sibling.

My first experience with the Sentient is in the Schecter KM-7 I picked up, I really like it! I didn't have to play with the pickup height at all and it is very crisp, warm, but nice and clear on chords and single notes. To my ears it is right where Duncan describes it, having a Jazz on active duty and formerly a '59.

When split on its own it is a bit thin. Sounds twangy but doesn't have that single coil cut. And then in the middle position with the Nazgul the tone is great, the Nazgul pulls back some of the brightness of the Sentient for a great sound that still cuts.

@Ascension I still have the Alt8 you sold me back in 2012, it isn't in a guitar right now but is more than likely going back in this month!

Re: Got the Sentenet neck in with the Alt 8 Bridge today

First time out with the new set up in a live setting was this morning. Had most of the band out so was running mostly on the Sentient alone or with both it and the Alt together. Cleans are AMAZING as are the fluid solo tones! Used the ol Carvin with the Alt/Sentient set up instead of my Strat for this one and that says something!

That sounds sweet!
Any clips with OD by any chance? I’d love to hear the solo tone.

Unfortunately the battery died in my camera this morning just after this song. Will get some more clips up ASAP of a little heavier stuff.

Went to the crunch channel here around 2:30 or so and stayed there for the rest of the song. Was using touch and the guitar volume to clean up and was running a good bit of gain. BOTH these pickups are very dynamic and really clean up and open up well at gain with touch and guitar volume!!!
Amp is an old Mesa Subway Rocket with a Digitec Polara verb and a Boss DD7 in the loop and ran a Boss CS3 at times on the front end for clean sustain.
