GOT the SILVERTONE, questions.

Damn, went down to get it earlier today, my first "real" amp, its a 1963 silvertone 1484 twintwelve model, and it sounds AMAZING, as said the reverb sucks ass, but damn the tremolo is sweet on this thing, its pretty loud but not to bad, have a couple a questions about it: what type of tubes should i put in it(is there anything you can replace 6L6's with?) i am thinkin electro harmonix, and i am thinking of swapping out the speakers(not the jensens, he said they were to shot to use) and making a new enclosure for the head and cab, what speakers(i want a british type tone) and how much work would it be to make a new enclosure, i dont think it would be hard.

damn this thing rocks.

Re: GOT the SILVERTONE, questions.

what's wrong with the enclosure?

as far as tubes, Scott likes the TAD 6L6s, and there are a couple other good ones, like the JJs, and SEDs (Svetlananas)

Re: GOT the SILVERTONE, questions.

If you have a classic amp I would not mess with the visuals unless there was a specific need to. You lose all value when you change em. These amps, esp if you have the full combo are gonna be worth a bunch of money in a few years. My Silvertone still has the original tubes in it and sounds fantastic. Don't change just cause you think new is better, in most cases it isn't. A tech can test them out very easily ( make sure it is a good one as some would be happy to steal all your "bad" tubes and them sell them for a nice profit).

Eminenece GB12s sound great with that amp and are very affordable. That head likes to see a 4 ohm load so you could get two 8 ohm and wire in parallel.

If it is a classic in original shape really try to keep it that way. There are not many of these old amps around and as an investment the more original you keep it the more money you will make if you sell it. They are very unique looking and that adds greatly to their charm IMO. ENJOY!!!!

Re: GOT the SILVERTONE, questions.

I like the tone of those old Silvertone 2 x 12 enclosures. Maybe just replace the speakers in it with some Celestions. But be careful....those old Silvertone enclosures are made out of paper. Kind of particle board/masonite mix!

If yours has the original speakers they are worth some money as they are usually blueframe Jensen C12Q's. You could sell them for what you'd pay for a combo of Celestion G12H30 and Vintage 30 speakers.

I like the NON Phillips 6L6 WGB in those. Those tubes are still fairly easy to find.

You're right: the reverb is the worst and the tremolo is one of the best! Swampy and rootsy...great for blues and roots music.

I have a killer Twin Twelve that my brother Bruce (http://www.missionamps.com) went
through and tweaked to perfection. He basically redesigned the whole layout inside and it sounds much much better than stock. It's for sale: amp and speaker cab. I'm selling most of my stuff that doesn't get played often.

i will have pics of the beast, probably this weekend, cause the parents left the digital camera some where's so i have to wait to get pics, lew and kevlar i think i am gonna take your advice and keep the stock enclosures, i am gonna swap out the speakers(there not jensens), i may swap out the tubes, partly because they've already been changed in the past.
