got to play a Fender Vibroking

yesterday i got to play an amazing relic Masterbuilt 52 tele thru a Vibroking... the tele was one in a million and had the loudest unplugged ring of any guitar i've had in my hands before... $4800 and it could be mine but i need my kidneys...

but also that amp is so amazing... but it's like seriously expensive!!!! i'd be wondering what amps is there for less with the simular sound... and is there any?

Re: got to play a Fender Vibroking

There's a trick to distorting a Vibro-King at a lower volume: turn the EQ knobs all the way down, turn the volume way up, then turn the Bass control up a little bit at a time. Overdrive!

really... hmm... Have to try that if i get a chance to play on one again... the VibroKing for sure is not a high gain amp but it has a nice full EQ that would take an Overdrive nicely in front of it

Re: got to play a Fender Vibroking

The Fender Custom Vibrolux Reverb is the baby brother to the Vibroking, so you've got the same at less volume.

Find one of these used if you can, and that's probably what you're looking for. It breaks up way earlier than a Vibroking and pushes less sound.

ya i saw that amp at the same store and was wondering if it was simular to the Vibroking

Play this amp before you buy it! It is a quirky performing amp and over priced. They buzz at idle and the stock speakers are only ok not great. Many owners wind up doing a speaker change to Webers and have a Hassler (sp?) mod done to the amp.

I got rid of mine and opted for a Carvin Nomad. Dropped an EV 12" speaker in there and I am a happy camper.

If you like the Custom Vibrolux Reverb, look for a nice used one to save bucks. Let the first guy take the blow.

Interesting Inteview (3 pages) I was reading at work Satrday night.. ;)

ya i read that article... the guy has like $60,000 worth of amps and customized guitars on the road.... mind ya at home he has a few vintage axes worth more then that.... i hear his 2 favourite guitars in his home are a 56 Hardtail Strat, and a mid 50's jumbo Gibson jazz box with 3 P90's....

in the studio i hear his favourite starting place for home demos is a 56 tele and a 50's Deluxe amp...

Re: got to play a Fender Vibroking

As Joe mentioned the CVR is the little brother to the VK but a VK smokes a CVR in every way in my book...it is bigger and richer sounding but a CVR with good speakers can be a hell of an amp and they overdrive at the drop of a hat!

Very cool amps!

My opinion is they break up to early. I was at 4 and could hear it. Meh...not the amp for me, but everyone has their own likes and dislikes.

I do love the sparkle sound of a Fender amp though. My Super Reverb is a sweet amp.

Can you Honestly blame him.. ;)
Fender amps and guitar's really reach into the Roots of Rock & Roll.
It would be very interesting to Imagine a world without that.

Maybe an adopted little brother. I've owned both amps and just sold my VK. They both break up early, have 6L6 power tubes and were designed by Bruce Zinky but the similarities end there. Preamp circuit, reverb circuit (and its placement in the preamp circuit) and tremolo are different. VK sounds way bigger (less boxey) with more tonal flavors to the reverb. The tremolo is more organic with less noise on the CVR though. Dave's has an older VK for $1495.

Yeah, given the choice, I'd definitely take the Vibro King. I've come close to getting one in the past.

I didn't know about Rocker Mike's trick for pulling more gain out if it though. I'll need to check that out next time I plug into some Fender amps.

Nice-looking specimen!

But dang... that shipping cost is probably scaring a lot of people off. The biggest/heaviest thing I ever sold on Ebay and shipped was a Hughes & Kettner Triamp Mk I in custom road case. It was a pretty big package and total weight was 96#. It was technically over the size/weight limit for Fedex Ground, but the counter gal was a little sweetie pie who let it go anyways. I think it ran somewhere around $100 and this was about 5 years ago. It wasn't an international shipment though -- just from MT to CA.
