Gotoh vs Grover

Re: Gotoh vs Grover

Both are very good. The stock Grovers on my 1986 Les Paul Custom have always stayed in tune well.

The same can be said for the Gotohs that were stock on my 1986 Fender Squire Strat. For a cheap squire, Fender put some good Gotoh tuners on it and it holds tune well.

IMO the final debate would be which knob you like better.

If you're upgrading, why not save up and get some locking tuners?

Re: Gotoh vs Grover

Im kinda on a budget to mod my guitar,
since im still a high school kid (dont hv a job)

i think im gonna give the Gotoh a try
if i can lay my hands on some Grovers here,
id probably use Grovers

Re: Gotoh vs Grover

Are you having problems with your tuners?

If not, then save your money for the next guitar and other mods,

Parts are not cheap in Malaysia and it's probably best to spend
the $$$ on a better guitar.

And BTW, the chinese stuff on your guitar isn't that bad anyway.

Cheers, Will

Re: Gotoh vs Grover

Why do you want to change them? My Ltd F-50 keeps in tune pretty well, except the damn G string. I have Grovers in my explorer and they are smoother but also loose pitch slowly.

I have always liked Grovers personally, but both are good. I especially like the Grover locking 18:1's.

Re: Gotoh vs Grover

i've had gotoh very similar to those, and loved them because they were so light. they were SG38's, but i think these might be a different model just because the tuner head is a different shape. otherwise, they identical. stay in tune great, and decently light!

Re: Gotoh vs Grover

Two things. Master luthier Dan Erlewine says that 90% of 'tuner problems' are really issues with the strings binding in the nut slots, and a lubricant will fix that. Since I started using graphite powder, I don't have 'tuner' issues anymore. No more annoying 'pings' and strings slipping.

Secondly, I'm a big fan of Grover Rotmatics. They're rugged and reliable, and always work well. I've had little experience with Gotoh's, but I bought a set years ago and the string posts wobbled all over (the sign of future tuning problems), so I returned them for Grovers. With good tuners, the string posts should always be straight, firm, and tight. If they wobble, you'll have problems.

Re: Gotoh vs Grover

If you order Dan Erlewine's book "How To Make Your Electric Guitar Play Great!" and look at pages 17 and 18, Gibson style locking wrap methods two and four will help a lot. Keeps the string from slipping around the posts. Invaluable book for many other things as well including doing your own setup. No one can setup your guitar better than you can with a few simple tools and a little practice.

Re: Gotoh vs Grover

Check The Bay for Sperzel Locking Tuners they can be had for not too much more than a new set of Grovers. Sperzels have a thumb wheel on the back of the tuner which lowers and raises the locking cam, pull the string thru the peg hole, turn the thumb wheel until the locking cam pinches the string and holds it in place, then tune the string to pitch, done.

Sperzels make for the fastest string changes known to man. You never have to wrap the strings around the post ever again. Also tuning your strings to pitch takes one full turn or less per tuner.....Idk about you but the faster I can change strings the sooner I can start playing.....its a win/win no brainer !!!

Re: Gotoh vs Grover

I have never had to replace any tuners on any of my guitars- expensive, mid-price, or cheap- I just don't ever seem to have tuning problems, and 3 of my guitars have a tremolo- (PRS floating, Bigsby, FR.)
I do take great pains in stringing, streching the strings, and lubing the nut and saddles, keeping the tuner buttons tight, and all the tuner hardware tight.

Re: Gotoh vs Grover

^^^^ All that. I like locking tuners though, Schallers are real nice, but you have to do a good bit of modification to most guitars, Planet Waves you don't on a Gibson, so I'm using them instead, and they cut off the string for you! They do add mass at the headstock, so far that hasn't proved to be a negative for me other than my SG wants to dip more on a strap, but I haven't tried moving the button yet.

Re: Gotoh vs Grover

To me, the difference between good quality tuners, or even stock tuners, is a moot point. What I really care about is the nut, and how good it's cut....and then making sure the intonation is 100% perfect.

+1. Excellent things everyone should do, at least if they want to avoid tuning problems.

Re: Gotoh vs Grover

I like both, and I have used both so either should work. If the tuners you have on there now work move on to somethining else as save your ca$h. as mentioned above.
