Gotoh VS100 Tremolo - Thoughts?

Re: Gotoh VS100 Tremolo - Thoughts?

Hey trey, wondering how you ended up liking the trem? Thinking about going for it on a guthrie govan style build... Trying to decide between a VS100, 510 trem, or a supervee

To be completely honest, its ok but not my favorite...it just feels different and off to me.

My favorite bridge is a Schaller 3801 or 2000 Tremolo, only ones I will be using on all of my future builds...I'd recommend either one of those. The 2000 Tremolo is the same stud spacing as the USA Fender 2-Hole Strat and the 3801 is the same stud spacing as the Floyd Rose. Both of these feel like a Floyd Rose but are not locking so when set up properly no tuning issues. Also, they have Roller Saddles which seem to help with the tuning stability.

If you really love the Floyd Rose but don't want to deal with the whole locking system/fine tuning system then I would recommend the 3801 or 2000.

Darned forgot bout those. Great units, too!

I like mine a lot, but I use mine with locking tuners. It is responsive, holds tuning well, and looks cool. I like it almost as much as my Super Vee Bladerunner, which feels a bit better although it has some weird quirks when setting it up initially.

Thanks for the reply man. Schaller huh... so many options-the plot thickens... I know Guthrie uses the floyd w/out the fine tuners. I just have perceived a less "full" tone when comparing my recessed floyd to my supervee equipped guitars. (which to be fair all three guitars are diff and the floyded one is a shredstick)

Love my bladerunners to death, but I wish I could get just a little crazier with them. The arm is shorter than other trems, making for less leverage.

Re: Gotoh VS100 Tremolo - Thoughts?

Let's dive a bit deeper into my previous post.

I have a profound fondness for the Hipshot contour trem because of the big steel block, the pop in arm and the bearings used for the fulcrum instead of knife edges. These bearings simply can't wear out.

the bladerunner also has the stability-thing as a selling point: a leaf of spring steel.

The ABM bridge I love has a baseplate of superhard cold rolled steel. I don't know why but I really like that unit. it has a bell-like ring to it in stead of a chime I associate with a steel block.

The V100 isn't a bad trem, per se. There are simply better alternatives out there.

Thanks dude!!!! This analysis is honestly super helpful. Definitely going to check out the hipshot, very intrigued...

Re: Gotoh VS100 Tremolo - Thoughts?

I really love the Floyd without Fine Tuners...but would rather have the Schaller with the roller saddles.

Definitely tons of options out there–you have to find what works and feels best for you.

Re: Gotoh VS100 Tremolo - Thoughts?

That Hipshot Countour Trem looks realy cool. I will have to try one.

Re: Gotoh VS100 Tremolo - Thoughts?

I think that the Schaller 2000 and Hipshot bridges would be great units. I have a Wilkinson Gotoh on my Godin Artisan and it has been a great tremolo. I actually really don't like tremolos on guitars, but the Wilkinson has been great enough that I actually really like having it. It is hard to go wrong with Gotoh in my opinion.
