grain filler over tru oil

i have an ash tele body that i've applied about 6-7 coats of tru oil after 2 aplications of grain filler and the grain is still open, i dont want to put anymore oil on because its already darker then i wanted it to be.

can i use grain filler over tru oil or is it only inteded for bare wood? i'd rather not sand it down back to bare wood. could i just scuff sand it with 0000 wire wool, apply more grain filler, sand again and then apply a few more coats of oil?

I feel your pain on this one. I'm currently using tru oil on a mahogany neck... without any grain filler.
This was done on purpose, as I was going to us the tru oil to fill the grain as well as finish it. I planned on it taking a long time and I wasn't wrong.

I would not put grain filler (or anything else) over the tru oil. What I would do (and what I'm doing on my neck) is to use 0000 steel wool to knock some of the tru oil down. Then, use steel wool between every future coat of tru oil. This will (in time) fill the grain while also allowing you to control the thickness of the finish.

Yes, it's going to be a lot of work, but I think it's worth it. Tru Oil is a nice product and is worth taking a little extra time to get it perfect.

Tru-oil should eventually fill the grain ,But Mahogany is tough to fill,And would take many time consuming applications. The only possibility I can see would be using a oil-Based grain filler ( Like reranch sells) Then of course testing on a scrap piece of mahogany?? You may want to post this ? on the reranch board.

the order should be sealer/ pore filler/ tru oil

at this point, I'd just rely on the final polishing to smooth it out as much as possible
