Grand Funk Fuzz?

So, I was listening to Grand Funk's Closer to Home during my evening commute (see this thread to find out why).

Does anybody know what sort of fuzz box Mark Farner used back in the day? His distortion tone is absolutely awful, in a cool, those-were-the-days kinda way. What about amps?

Glad I never took drugs, or that album would bring on some serious flashbacks.

Re: Grand Funk Fuzz?

He was playing through West amps...I always thought they sounded awful! They were locally made in Michigan back in the late 60's. I always assumed they were early solid state amps because that's what they always sounded like to me. But I never played through one myself. Another band called the Frost also used them. I used to see them onstage at the Grande Ballroom.

D#ck Wagner was the lead guitarist in the Frost, BTW. Always hated that band's music, even though they were really big for a while.
