Granny's Peanut Brittle (a thrash lullaby)

Re: Granny's Peanut Brittle (a thrash lullaby)

Do you want any opinions on the mix or do you have it figured out? I don't want to comment if you know what you're doing and don't want anyone to interfere.

The guitar tone is mean as hell. I dig it. That guitar tone is ACE! Dark enough, not too bright. Metal dry (the good kind). You nailed it. I guess it's just begging for a slamming bass now.

NOTE: (For those that are reading my modern gear thread, I don't consider this to be over saturation, it's nowhere near buzzy or fizzy enough. I consider it functional high gain.)

lol feel free to speak your mind brah! always useful to hear another's perspective

Thats cool that people are digging the tones, i was really unsure about them

Re: Granny's Peanut Brittle (a thrash lullaby)

That's an unsure tone? I would never have guessed. Sounded like you had it really dialed in to me lol.

Besides the lack of bass guitar (if you want any guest musicians I'd love to lay down a slammin' bass guitar on this one) the core tones are good. They've just got to be blended together. From what I can tell you're using drumkit from hell right? So there's a lot of room to tweak from there.

So what we need is for that kick drum to really hit and thump. Get the snare to thwack a little more in the low-mids and lose some of the trash can. Get those toms to rattle the floor and push some of those cymbals back and make them a wee bit filthier. It's got loads of potential though. Like I said, the core sounds are great, they're just too hollow and spaced out. Gotta 'emulsify' our ingredients :)

Re: Granny's Peanut Brittle (a thrash lullaby)

hooo! i'd be grateful and honored if you'd lay down some mighty bass. My friend who was originally going to is too busy to record what with life and marriage coming up.

I hear what youre saying about the mix in general. I really havent gotten around to doing any global tweaking to give it a cohesive sound. As for the drums i used drumkit from hell beats but with the pop kit. Its very bright and tinny compared to what i usually use (a custom preset i've named "heavy" that gets a 70's stoner thing going). i actually kind of like the harsh bite it has but who knows everything may change. I appreciate the constructive feedback!

You can download the uncompressed track on soundcloud and send me the bass stem(s) if that works for you. Let me know!

Ok sure no problem! I'll get started tonight.

How about I send you two tracks, an amped version and the DI so you can make adjustments in case you're not entirely happy with it or mix it in half and half?

Done! Just uploading all the files including a rendered out mp3 so you can hear it in the mix :)

Re: Granny's Peanut Brittle (a thrash lullaby)

Cool man! I had a feeling my tone might have been a bit filthy/springy for you but that's why I gave you the DI option. The low end is a bit wide and kinda eats everything up on your new mix but apart from that it sounds so f-ing good with good bass :)

Cheers for the shout-out.

Re: Granny's Peanut Brittle (a thrash lullaby)

i think the problem is i ended up putting too much compression on the new master and turned the kick up a bit too much. I think i was trying to do a big phat mix for a hard, dry song!

Thanks again brah! :beerchug:

Re: Granny's Peanut Brittle (a thrash lullaby)

You're welcome. Fair enough. The drums sound pretty good too. What did you reamp the DI through?

Re: Granny's Peanut Brittle (a thrash lullaby)

actually ran it through a guitar VST, believe it or not. The Le456 by Lepou (guy does lots of wonderful free VST's) and LeCab2 using Marshall 1960A impulse responses (blend of SM57 and Audix i5)

I need to find some good bass amps and cabs

Re: Granny's Peanut Brittle (a thrash lullaby)

Just listened to this again through my new active surround headphones and with the new one I think my bass works really well for your songs. We're halfway to some sort of supergroup haha.
