If you are running a 6L6 amp and you are looking to retube it, check these out...

I got a pair in my last Mission Amps kit and they kick serious butt. About 20% less power and 150% more tone.

$16 a piece keeps them as cheap as JJs or Svets. I appreciate Bruce turning me onto them. I stuck a set into my Two Rock and I like the tone much better than the JJs that came stock, or the GT6L6GEs I had in my pro reverb, or an old tired pair of RCA 6L6s I had laying around.

Definitely try them before you look to spend 100 bucks on a set of NOS 5881's.

Re: Great 6L6WGC Tubes (5881)

the TADs got a lot of mention over on the Fender forum. I think they're Chinese made, sold by a German company - is that correct?

anyway, the bottle looks like the old Sylvania 6L6 WGBs

Re: Great 6L6WGC Tubes (5881)

engineered by a german guy, used to be associated with Ruby Tubes from what I understand. I dont' care who makes them, they sound incredibly good.

Re: Great 6L6WGC Tubes (5881)

I've got some JANs in my Blue Angel that I'm not overly crazy about. I'll have to give them a try.

Re: Great 6L6WGC Tubes (5881)

OK, I might get stoned for saying this, but, I'm in love with the current Electro Harmonix 6L6's. It's a great, Russian made tube that goeas for around $30 locally.

Re: Great 6L6WGC Tubes (5881)

Hmm... Scott, why do you think these cheap tubes (only in price, clearly) sound better than more expensive ones?

Re: Great 6L6WGC Tubes (5881)

does TAD have any large bottle tubes?

Have you tried them in a 50 watt or similar blackface amp? These sound really good!

Re: Great 6L6WGC Tubes (5881)

I think that it's probably the same factory in china that has a big hand in making the Groove Tube 6L6GE. The german engineer (TAD) seems to have helped keep the factory on track. $32 a pair is a steal. The do have some large bottles, but Mojo isout of them right now.

Most tube amp guys will tell you not to judge a tube until you try it in a particular amp. Some of my amps have liked what is considered crappy tubes. Some of the most expensive tubes I've tried didn't work in certain amps. YMMV.

Re: Great 6L6WGC Tubes (5881)

hmmm...
i read some of the reviews on the sight and i might have to try a set in my bassman, sounds like they are a sweet tube for that breakin up tone i like.

Re: Great 6L6WGC Tubes (5881)

What are they getting for a quad? Sounds like the perfect tube to tame
my SF Twin down a Lil'. I just paid $25 for 1 Phillips JAN 6L6 for my
Champ 12. I noticed a drop in power right away, BUT A HUGH !! Difference
in tone!! It Chimes like a Class A amp should Now. :)

Re: Great 6L6WGC Tubes (5881)

20% less power will be sweet too. that damn thing is just a touch too loud for most rooms so a little less volume to get the goods will be nice. hows the bottom end when you push em? pretty tight but thick and full?

Re: Great 6L6WGC Tubes (5881)

Cool,

So many of the new 6l6 types I play just feel hard response wise. These sound like they could be just what I am looking for.

I thought the 6L6GE was made here in the USA. In fact, I remember some ads saying that it was the only tube to be made here. I just checked the GT website, and they say it is 95% US components. Does that mean it is made in china from US parts. What's the deal?

Re: Great 6L6WGC Tubes (5881)

I think there is some serious marketing-speak going on with the 6L6GE. I wonder if what GT is trying to say is 95% of hte parts are made with the old GE machinery, but I think it's located in China now. It's pretty confusing.

The 6L6GE is a nice sounding tube. I'm pissed right now that a little ring inside one mine came loose last night when I was taking the tube out of hte amp. Now I've got a little disaster waiting to happen, rollling around inside the glass.

GT hasn't returned my email yet. I'm assuming they'll replace it. myles is a pretty cool guy.

hey scott, does TAD make good 12ax7's. I need one for a mic, clean no noise.

I've not heard great things about them when I was reading up. JJ makes great new stock ECC83S. Reasonably cheap. The Groove Tube Mullard copy, 12AX7M, are nice and warm. I like em. But they're pricy.

Re: Great 6L6WGC Tubes (5881)

Hey Scott, or anyone. I'll ship 3 Mullard GT's for $36. Only a few hours on them. They just don't do much for me in my Budda for whatever reason. Let me know. I'm also curious about these TAD's. Reduction in the Budda 80 watts might be cool. That sucker is loud!
