Great 6L6WGC Tubes (5881)

Re: Great 6L6WGC Tubes (5881)

i just recently put those in a fender tonemaster. I put the Groove tube 6l6GEs in a twin I have, and the thing is atomic. LOUD, LOUD, LOUD. Havn't got the tonemaster back from the amp man. I am anxious to try it now!! I have a twin I may try the 6l6gwcs in too. I like the idea of less power, and early break up. I am starting to wonder why I wanted 100+ watt amps in the first place. Any amps I get in the future will have to be able to reduce power, like the bogners, thds and such.

Re: Great 6L6WGC Tubes (5881)

You wanted 100 watts because you NEEDED 100 watts! haha!

The volume difference between 50 and 100 watts isn't really that much.

Re: Great 6L6WGC Tubes (5881)

that's very true, but a twin gets that mad amount of headroom many jazz players need in a loud setting. I guess its not the volume as much in wattage but the headroom, pretty much the effective wattage.

How much would those tad 6l6wgc's reduce power in my bandmaster? Right now i have mesa tubes in it and they refuse to give up the goods, instead the peavey scorpions start distorting like a mofo making all sorts of fart sounds. I'd like to hear a nice speaker/power tube distortion combo, i figure new g12h30's and 6l6wgc's would be just what the doctor ordered.

Re: Great 6L6WGC Tubes (5881)

I'm pretty sure that the blonde bandmaster up to 63 was designed with 5881's in mind. Your amp probabaly wants this tube over a standard high output 6L6.

Speakers, I can't help you with that. If you are trying to save money at all, get a set of Eminence Texas Heats. Great speakers for old Fenders.

Re: Great 6L6WGC Tubes (5881)

texas heats are how much $$? I presume they make a nice SRV tone, but according to lew the g12h30's rip in the ceramics department.

Re: Great 6L6WGC Tubes (5881)

You can get a pair of Heats for about a 100 total. check with dave at avatar speakers.

Re: Great 6L6WGC Tubes (5881)

what makes a circuit harder or softer in tone/headroom? i think the tweeds used 5881's.
