Great Bang For Buck Tone Change

Re: Great Bang For Buck Tone Change

I keep coming back to Fender Heavy. I've noticed that the solid color ones seem to last longer than the moto pearl type. I've tried a bunch of others, but it doesn't matter to me. Fender Heavies are at every store.

Yeah definitely. My Dunlop Adamas 2.0mm graphite picks really make the notes jump out.
Where did you get them from?

Re: Great Bang For Buck Tone Change

Dunlop Blues and greens for me. I used to use oranges, but they were too floppy.

Re: Great Bang For Buck Tone Change

Hmmm...
EVH uses brass picks cut from old cymbals
Slash uses Dunlop Torex purple
Rick Neilsen uses a white Fender style that is about a medium

I use the Dunlop Orange I used to use Fender Jazz Heavy for ages, then I used Gibson heart picks in a heavy, then Dunlop Purple, then Green, then Yellow, now Orange .60mm. Actually I switched to the Black Gold version, seem to have a better grip for some reason?

That's what im talking about! I tried all those dunlops and they all got eaten up from playing too many licks :smack:

I'm curious about those jazz picks though-if they last indefinitely, ill probably grab a bag.

Re: Great Bang For Buck Tone Change

2mm Dunlop Stubbies. When the tip gets dull I take some fine sandpaper and sharpen it just a bit.

Re: Great Bang For Buck Tone Change

This is very very ironic. I've been using the blue Dunlop 1mm Tortexes for a couple years now. A few days ago I tried a Fender Thin pick and realized that I could nail all my leads and solos faster and cleaner, so now I'm using both red Fender thin picks for leads and blue Dunlop Tortexes for rhythm (the thin picks break very easily :laugh2: )

Re: Great Bang For Buck Tone Change

I'm currently in a pick dilemma. For my rhythm playing, standard sized picks make this horrid 'scratch' sound whenever a note is picked, because of the rounded tip. I need a pointed tip like on the JazzIII's, and that's the current pick I've been using for the past 6 months or so. I need to get some different textured picks in that size, though, because I'm finding that they don't sound as 3D as other picks sometimes.

It also is a technique issue. I angle my pick forward about 35-40 degrees, so that's what causes the 'scratch' with normal picks.

Re: Great Bang For Buck Tone Change

I use the orange tortex.. going heavier than that causes too many strings to break...

Re: Great Bang For Buck Tone Change

Simon....try changing your strings once in a while too.

same here. my favorite was actually a green (.88) fender pick thats made out of the same kinda material as tortex, but it was a rounded triangle (not one of the triangle picks with the harsh angles). i stole one from a friend once and loved it, but i could never find em anywhere

Re: Great Bang For Buck Tone Change

big white triangle picks are so cool. i definitely want a box of those. also the black 1mm dunlops with the cool texture. I used to find those in my school's parking lot but then i moved so my source was cut-off...haha

This has been said before, but it's so easily overlooked and worth repeating.....

TRY SOME DIFFERENT PICKS!! :D

I grabbed a blue (1 mm) Tortex instead of the usual orange (0.6 mm) for band practice last night. Wow, what a difference, I was really cutting through, and hitting notes more positively. Bigger sound all around, really brought things to life. Gonna order me some more blues! :)

Forget that new boutique amp you've been gassing for, buy a new pick instead and spend the rest of the money on the lady in your life! :newangel:
I don't think there's anything better for strumming chords than the Dunlop Tortex .60mm, but I really like the Ultex .73mm for making notes jump out. The Tortex .73mm sounds a little dull to me, and slightly too stiff. The Ultex of the same gauge keeps that sparkle I like but is a little more stiff to speed things up a bit. Give the Ultex a try.

I've got the .60mm Ultex on order and I'm anxious to try them out. Should be here by the time I get my baby back.

*sigh*

I need to buy more guitars so I don't get stuck without one ever again.

Re: Great Bang For Buck Tone Change

I agree, picks really do change the tone and they're more important than some give credit for.

1.14mm Dunlop Ultex for me, never looking back :)

+1 I used to used dunlop yellows but I found that they didn't give me enough control when I was playing lead. However, I love them for my acoustic. They give just enough spring.

This is what I was getting at when I started the thread. It doesn't matter what picks you use, you'll find that trying something different can result in a BIG change in your tone and your whole playing experience. And they're cheap!

Stating the obvious is my speciality, but someone's gotta do it. :)
