great cabs for HUGE live sound?

hey guys i'm currently running my AOR into an 80's or 90's crate 4x12 that i got in a trade for a Metal Muff. It does its job as far as letting me hear the amp, but I certainly dont feel like i'm getting the output i COULD be getting. Its a closed back cab and is actually lighter than the Laney head.

What cabs do you recommend for loud as hell doomy stoner metal? I dont just wanna drown in bass and low mids though, my solos need to sound their best as well. What speakers really bring out an AOR's character and do you think i should get the speakers first for the crate or get the cab first and use the crate speakers in it until i upgrade them? Realistically i would have to buy one or the other first

edit: strongly leaning toward these guys http://www.electricamp.com/

What's your budget? With no budget in mind, I'd say the Randall Lynch Cab... I love the darn thing. Vader may also work. And lastly, I'd keep the crate and swap the speakers... if they are stock, I could only imagine the chinese junk they threw in there. [I have an Ampeg cab and the speakers were complete garbage; Crate and Ampeg are the owned by the same parent co. if I remember right].

EDIT: The Electric cabs look decent enough [the pic showing the baffle is a little cheap for $1125+ shipping], but Port City, Vader, Bogner, Mills, Mesa, Orange and high end Randall cabs are nicer. Just offering alternatives, some of which are cheaper, or just nicer.

budget would probably be in the 600-900 range maximum. Once i know what to look for i'll scour the used market before resorting to a new cab

My vintage Acoustic 2/15 cab with a center port is without a doubt the biggest, fattest, and fullest cab I have ever played through. Picked it up for 75.00 on Craigslist, was just gonna sell it for profit, plugged into it, and holy hell... Heavy but has wheels. It will take a lot of the extreme upper mids out of that Laney, and give you a much more vintage sound. It has to be rewired to 16 ohms, and I swapped a CTS ceramic on the top, left the original alnico Emi on the bottom. Instant old school... I don't know how the newer ones stack up, but the vintage one is IT!

very interesting suggestion there, especially considering the price to tone ratio

i'm definitely going to look into that during my search

Re: great cabs for HUGE live sound?

no speaker suggestions? i'm looking for that low mid growly tone

If you get a vintage one, there were a couple different speaker options. It cam loaded with two alnico eminence, which was a bit swampy. The early 70s ceramic CTS I put on the top made for the perfect blend. Old CTS and Emi 15s ( or any size) can be found quite cheap and I have liked all of em... Not much new that I use these days. I love the looser sound of vintage speaks, plenty to be had in great shape...

Re: great cabs for HUGE live sound?

I sold my Marshall 4x12 after I got my Earcandy Buzzbomb 'cause the 2x12 Buzzbomb sounded bigger.

Re: great cabs for HUGE live sound?

The "biggest" sounding cab I have ever heard was the Mesa Recto cab. Even while recording, its sounds "big" in a good way.

Re: great cabs for HUGE live sound?

Not to derail or anything but how do you like that AOR? I've got the 50 watt combo version and it's the bassiest thing I've ever heard in my life...

Re: great cabs for HUGE live sound?

either randall or mesa are the way to go for huge tone, the VHT cabs are super nice too but very expensive

the only time the AOR sounds bassy to me is when i hit the bass boost at lower master volume settings (12 o clock or lower), as you crank up the master the other frequencies balance it out. I think it just goes to show its an amp meant to be played full tilt and nothing less :cool2:

I still havent found a good hard rocking tone at standard tuning but this amp just loves downtuned riffage. Suddenly things come to life.
