Great cheap delays?

Re: Great cheap delays?

$50? Nothing that will compare to your DD-3, that's for sure.

If you can go up to the $70 range you'll find plenty of great delays on the used market, including the DD-3.

Yeah - been noticing that. Might have to expand my horizons.

Re: Great cheap delays?

I think you should be able to get another DD3 from GC.com in the used section for around $50. They always have cheap used boss pedals. I use the Akai Analog Delay (sweet name right?) which I got for embarrassingly cheap ($15). It's a nice warm and subtle analog delay with a ton of delay time, more than I've seen from most all other analog delays. I think it's actually just a copy of the BYIANG delay that you can get for around $50. Again, GC may have them for cheap but on clearance.

Its longer than most because its not analog.

Re: Great cheap delays?

Agreed I have a Delay Machine myself and it ain't bad!
These are surprisingly decent for the $ and if I did not already have several other delays would keep mine. Holds it's own with my Boss DD-3 and 7 in tone.
The DM is $50 shipped new but if you are interested in the one I have FS here yell and let's talk.

Everything I've read points that it is. I'd be interested to know how it isn't. I see that it's based on one of two BYIANG delays, one of which is all analog with real BBD. The other is partially digital, but still technically analog. Either way it does sound analog, not digital at all, and it doesn't have any negative characteristics of some analog delays. I just couldnt bare the nasty volume and high mid boost my memory toy gave me. The akai doesn't alter the dry sound, 1.2 seconds of delay, and it's got a nice warm sound.

Re: Great cheap delays?

So when we're talking "digital", are we talking a large IC like a Coolaudio that does more than just what a PT2399 IC chip does? I thought that unless you were doing old-school tape delay, it's all digital.
For the record, Behringer bought the rights to Coolaudio a while ago, so chances are they're going to have really nice digital delays in their machines.

"Based on" is a nice way of putting it.

As for it being analog: impossible. Here is a REAL analog delay with 6 BBD chips, giving 900 ms of delay: the Way Huge Supa Puss.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/amplifiers-effects/way-huge-electronics-supa-puss-delay-pedal

The Biyang ... er, sorry, "Akai" would need at least 9 BBD chips to give 1200 ms. At even a generously low estimate of $3 per chip wholesale, that's a costly circuit, and we haven't even factored in all the other necessary components! There is absolutely no way they'd even recoup their costs at that price, let alone make a profit. That's why the Supa Puss, with significantly less delay time, costs $250. Those BBD chips are expensive!

Even if you put aside the cost of the chips, you simply can't fit nine of them in that Biyang enclosure.

If you like the pedal, that's awesome, but don't fool yourself (and others who read this) into thinking it's something it's not.

Re: Great cheap delays?

Well if it's not I wish the rest of the internet world who claims that it is indeed analog could read your post.

Carbon Copy is the way to go. I have a DD6 and a CC, they are very different and very complimentary to each other. Bite the bullet my friend you wont regret it.

Re: Great cheap delays?

You know - I'm really jonesing for an AD-9. Shouldn't have ever gotten rid of it back in the day. That said, since I remember the price back in the day, I have a lot of trouble going to 100 for one of them. Still, the Carbon would be a nice compliment as well.

DD-3 + AD-9, and my delay rig is complete.

I don't really care about the mega awesomeness of analog....usually. But sometimes it is nice.

Re: Great cheap delays?

ad-9s are sweet.
I had one of these back in the day....the only pedal i regret selling. Traded it in for a dd-2. I guess it was the 80s...

Re: Great cheap delays?

+1 on the Ibanez DE7, fantastic sounding echo and delay...the prices are going up on these lately. Favorite delay in all? Without a doubt the Vox Time Machine, future eBay treasure!

Re: Great cheap delays?

I have a Dan-Echo that is fantastic. Every once in a while I see them floating around for $50 or so. The Mooer Reecho isn't bad either, but mine never gets used.

Re: Great cheap delays?

I really like my Digitech Digidelays Modulated setting and it has tap tempo although the looper is a bit cumbersome to get in time. Picked it up for $50 on eBay so reckon its cheap enough. Much prefer it to the delay sound on the DD-3 and RV-3's I've played but I prefer the softness and less 'harsh' sounds of modulated delay. The tape delay mode is cool because it hides in the mix well.

Re: Great cheap delays?

If you can build, an Echo Base is rumored to cost ~$70 in parts... And do EVERYTHING.
