Re: Great Deal On Epi...

Yup...the MIC are def not bad guitars in the overall sense...I've seen more good ones of them, than bad...the korean ones are just all over the map..

I had a twin to Eriks...that guitar wasn't the prettiest or had the best QC (not bad though) but it played very very well, and had 90% of the tone of a good Gibson for 1/3 the price...with some better pups and some better electronics it would def have been closer to 99%

play a few, you'll find one that sings...

Re: Great Deal On Epi...

That Epi looks nice!

Last week I got a Korean Epi LP Standard (honeyburst) for $490. It was on the wall for $599. I dunno, there is no way i am going to buy a guitar mail-order. I had to try around 15-20 guitars as it was...until I found THE ONE! It stood out even among the sub-$1000 Gibsons. I have to feel any prospective guitar with my own hands!

$490+$200(for EMG's if I want to)=$690. I consider that a better deal for me, as black finish/hardware does not float my boat, and the honeyburst is beautiful, IMO.

Yeah, to each his own. I pay 65 each for EMG's brand new ;).

I do like the honeyburst a tad better, though, but only because I already have enough black guitars.

Re: Great Deal On Epi...

My uncle has an Epiphone Special II that will absolutely blow you guys away. I wish I could say I was kidding, but he found one in a million and that guitar was done right. We're talking killer sustain, perfect intonation, no fret buzz, sharp frets or binding issues. I couldn't believe how good it sounded. The wood still looked to be Epi quality, but it was very resonant, I guess the man just really lucked out.

It doesn't really matter what faults cheaper guitars have with active pickups. EMGs will make the thinnest, crappiest sounding guitar sound perfectly fine with metal, hard rock and the like because they have a tone and voice all of their own regardless of what they're being used in. I laugh at people like Zakk Wylde using $2000+ Les Paul Customs and then covering up the natural tone with EMG 81 and 85s. You could buy a Squire, throw the 81/85 combo in and get the same exact tone for A LOT LESS money.

I do too, but not $2000 worth of expectations. I know that there will be some flaws here and there. Back in 1994 I bought my USA Strat brand new for $499, listed for $900 back then. It still had some flaws. The pickups are weak as hell for one, the setup was questionable but otherwise a solid axe.

I've replaced the pickups on just about everything I've ever owned, so that bad setups, and things like a poorly cut nut aren't a big deal to me because they're easy to fix. You can't do anything about the wood & quality of construction...and I'm sort of iffy on replacing hardware. If it's broken or junk on an otherwise good guitar I'll do it but otherwise I'll leave it as-is.

When I went LP hunting, I knew I was going to get an Epi. I couldn't afford a Gibson and didn't find any good used ones around anywhere when I first started looking, except one that sold real fast. I used to sell them so I knew what I was looking for and what to expect. When I picked up the MIC models, I was floored at how well they are made and the sound is there. Mine resonates really well and has killer tone. I don't care of it can kill a $2000 Standard or not. I just want it to play well and sound good for what I paid for it. If I buy a $3000 Custom, that thing better sing like no other and play like butter.

Have you picked up a new $3K Custom? They're so overpriced it's ludicrious. Most of 'em feel so dead to me that I can understand why someone would pick an Epiphony for 1/5 of the price and put new pickups in it. I'd rather get a Hamer or look for a killer used LP Studio. I found a Gary Moore for that's super light and highly resonant and just destroyed every Standard & Classic I put it against and the best part? It was $1000.

The price is somewhat irrelevent though...a good guitar is a good guitar and piece of poo is a piece of poo. I'll put my $600 Hamer Diablo up against a $2K Anderson or Shur any day of the week and the quality of work, fit, finish, playability are second to none and still kick the crap out of a new $600 imported guitar. Sloppy inlays and binding are one thing, but super thick finished and dead wood are another.

It's a matter of going in with the right frame of mind with the price range that's being looked at. Yes, some are better than others, I agree, but for the price, the MIC's are good guitars.

I guess...but I don't care about "good for the price" when I buy something. I want something that's good regardless of the price. I wanted & needed an LP...I went through Epi's, Schecter, ESP, Hamer, PRS etc. and I would've spent up to $2K or so on that guitar...getting a good one for $1K was great!

Very true. The tonality of the wood comes first, or resonance of it.

Actually I have played a new Custom. 2 of them in fact. Both resonated like all get out, felt great, flawless contruction, and the tone was unreal. They kept sustaining even after I put them down. :D

That's a sweet deal for a Moore. I won't touch a Standard or Classic. If I'm going after a Gibby, it's gonna be a Custom. I love the feel of the necks on them, the pickups. They feel right to me.

I couldn't be happier with my Epi LP. With the CC/Jazz combo, tone just leaps out of it. Listen to my clips (Hear This link in my sig).

Re: Great Deal On Epi...

Man, I love my epi LP classic. I spent $450 on mine new, and the action was the only thing I really had to adjust when I got home, 'cause I put a heavier gauge string on there. I was expecting the pots to be scratchy, or the pickups or switch to crap out on me, but it's all held together well for me.

I planned on putting some new pickups in there when these started falling apart (as I'd heard so many people complaining that they did), so I could justify the extra expense, but the guitar still sounds great.

Guitar Center.

Is this a "sale price" or does GC deal on the pickups like they deal on the guitars? I have only been to GC twice in my life, as I am experiencing a second rebirth with the guitar. I actually love to wheel and deal at guitar stores.
