Great pick ups for an SG please

Re: Great pick ups for an SG please

I've just bought an old Korean SG off Ebay, feels great, but sounds awful !!
Solid mahogany body, rosewood neck.

If you're looking for balls, get a Pearly Gates set.

If you'd like a more balanced, play-anything-with-style vibe, so get a Jazz set and use the tone control to roll-off a little bit the highs... if ever you'll find it too trebly.

Re: Great pick ups for an SG please

Wow, so much great feedback.

OK, the borrowed Custom Custom is too clumsy in the neck, its nice when played clean but doesn't seem to get onto a fully driven mode in this position, something seems to be blocking or limiting the sound - as the blurb says, its designed for the bridge but this seemed to be an electrical thing - perhaps as I've only got 2 terminal to connect on the guitar ?

Saying that, I didn't like the CC too much in the bridge either - again it seemed to be limiting itself (maybe a faulty pick up or perhaps the number of terminals connected ??)

OK, I've ordered a Duncan Custom for the bridge - the PAF on steroids. I've got the options of Jazz, 59, Distortion or Full Shred for the neck. I guess the Jazz is the most flexible tone ? As I'm trying to get as Hi-fi as I can, I guess the Jazz is best ???

Thanks

Re: Great pick ups for an SG please

I have a Jazz in the neck position of my Epiphone baritone Les Paul. It's a pretty rockin pickup. To me it sounds like classic Gibson tone with a hi-fi edge.

Re: Great pick ups for an SG please

Well thanks guys.

I've now got the Custom at the bridge and a Jazz in the neck and it sounds great. The standard humbucking configuration was a bit too harsh, so I tried one of the others on the spec sheets and it sounds perfect now, plenty of West Coast crunch with a hint of hi-fi definition - I can't remember which config I did use though !!

Both pick ups now sound great on their own, combine very nicely and are clean and defined enough to use my favourite flangs effect without having a wasp attack going on.

Yes, even a hoary old Korean plank of mahagony can sound fantastic with the input you guys gave me - thanks again
