I got a Fender Blues Deluxe reissue yesterday and it freaking rocks. I had some difficulty getting a great sound at lower volumes, but with some tweaking of the pedals I recorded the following sound test. I was playing quiet enough not to disturb family watching TV in the next room.
I learned some things and a couple of tricks with it. The preamp is real easy to fart out so you have to be very careful with the output level of the overdrive pedal. If the level is too high the amp starts getting a nasally static when you play.
I learned that you have to turn the volume up at around 2:00 and use the output level of the pedal to control the volume. It loses a lot of treble so I turn the up tone control to compensate.
When the amp is really loud, the speaker breaks up kind of farty. I'll see how it sounds when it's finally broken in but I'm pretty sure a speaker change is in order to accomodate more rock styles. I think the Blues Deluxe is great for rock. You might be able to do some metal on it because it does sound kind of similar to an HRD but that's not what I bought it for. I did experiment with my Guyatone OD and got some pretty good sounding chugga-chugga riffs but you're not going to get aggressive dual rect stuff.
With humbuckers you can't get the volume past 4-5 without getting a lot of breakup. I figured out that if I use the low input and turn the tone controls down to about 9:00 it cleans up some more, then one click of the guitar vol and it's fairly clean with that cool sounding Fender sparkle.
Well considering I only played the amp for 2 hours I think I've dialed in some pretty good low volume sounds. Tell me what you think.
Sound test. It's basically the same licks played with differnet pedals. Sorry no rock stuff yet. Here are the parts:
1. Clean Dimarzio Super Distortion Bridge & Dimarzio Air Norton Neck
2. Same but with Maxon CS9 chorus
3. Maxon VOP9 overdrive with bridge and neck PU
4. Guyatone HDM5 Micro Hot Drive with bridge and neck PU
5. Short lead licks with Guyatone then 2 with VOP9
