Greatest amp you’ve ever played

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

Do you think the Triple Rec covers more sonic territory than the Dual Rec, apart from just being an extra 50 watts?

Not really, but the 2010+ reborns have a wider range of versatility and tones in general, and a great stock loop.

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

Out of what I own, it's a toss up between the Mesa Boogie MkV and Electra Dyne. The MkV is super versatile and sounds great, but the simplicity of the Electra Dyne is really nice, and it sounds great too. My Supro 1600 Supreme is also an excellent sounding amp, just plug into the jumpered channel and crank both volumes, unfortunately with no band and living in an apartment, I rarely am able to do that anymore.

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

The main reason I ask is because in a year I’ll be able to upgrade to my amp.
The Roadster Head was among those I was considering.
Alongside that I was considering:
Diezel VH4
Revv Generator 120 MKII
Engl Invader 120 II
Marshall JVM410H
For reference I’m looking at 4 channel amps because I need a clean sound, Heavier Rhythm for Thrash, Heavy Rhythm for Extended range progressive stuff, Liquid like lead channel.

If you are open to pedals you could get a regular 2 channel amp and then use pedals to get the other tones you’re looking for.
You may save a little money this way too.

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

This is going to sound so silly. The first real amp I had was a mid '80s Solid State Fender Princeton Chorus. With red knobs. It was the amp that I really grew with as a player, and used in the band I was in in College. If I'd hear it today, I'm not sure it would sound as good to me, but back then, it was the most amazing thing I had ever heard. Beautiful clean, and the chorus was divine. The crunch channel was just right. Just enough growl for leads and roll the volume back a bit and perfect for the dirtier blues.

Like I said, I'm sure it didn't really sound that great, but to me, with where I was in my musical journey, it was the greatest thing ever. Didn't hurt that I got it used for $150 at the time. It eventually fizzed out, and it wasn't worth it to fix. I still mourn that day.

Way back when I had a Fender “85” I think it was called. I remember the clean change being great and although the gain change got lots of grit it wasn’t the best I’d ever heard. But I was just a beginner then. It was probably my 2nd “real” amp.

I’m limited on the pedals I have on the board I have a ten output power supply 8 9v 2 18v
For the 9v I use
Wah, OD, Octave, Fuzz, Noise Gate, Chorus, Delay and Reverb
For the 18v I use
EQ and Compressor.
With the two channel amp I’m close but it’s not perfect so I’m just trying to get closer.
I also use a tuner but that’s using a battery since it’s not used all that often.

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

I'm saying a three way tie...as a rock player - rock, classic rock, hard rock, heavy rock, etc....

1. Gearjoneser's Bogner (At SDUG day)
2. Soldano SLO 100 (in Snakeskin)
3. Splawn Quick Rod

Honorable mentions go to the Marshall 2555 Silver jubilee and my Mesa Stiletto....which upped the Marshall 2555 just enough to win that battle)

My personal favorite for Country and Americana - 6119 Gretsch T-Rose through my Black Face Twin Reissue.

Roadster won't do what you want out without a pedal in the mix. Channel 1 and 2 have two clean modes and one dirty (but not heavy) mode. You may be able to goose the Brit or Tweed modes with a boost or OD to get a heavier rhythm tone. Then again, I didn't use really high output pickups, that could help, too.

It usually does.

Even with the custom in my Schecter, neither setting gets in the neighborhood of what I would consider thrashy. I really think a pedal would be needed to push the Brit into that territory and the Tweed would take some serious EQ shaping in addition to the boosting

I was using an EMG 81, and I was pretty satisfied at the time. I have also been using less gain than I used to use. Would I be happy using dirt pedals with a $2,000-$3,000 multichannel tube amp? It doesn’t seem to bother me when the amp is a Marshall.

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

Ampeg V-4 or V-2. Actually, the combo versions (VT-22 and VT-40) are just as good, if not better.

Ballsy, powerful, loud, great reverb, great "base" tone, and very versatile controls, even by today's standards...but especially for the time. They can do their own thing, plus sound like a Marshall or a Fender.

They were built like brick **** houses too.

Their only problems are weight (part of being built like a brick **** house) and that they are too loud for most venues. The V-2/VT-40 is the right amp for most gigs, rather than the V-4/VT-22. But even the V-2/VT-40 is often too damned loud.

I have a V-4 and its original 4x12 cab.

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

I own a few of the best amps I've ever played, but aside from those I'd have to say a former bandmates Peters 100w Hydra and 50w Gryphon.

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

50W Bogner Helios. I play hard rock/metal/classic rock. It was an anthology of Marshall amps.

The Helios Eclipse is suppose to address and improve upon the "flaws" of the Helios. It probably sounds epic.

I have the 100 watt Helios and its fantastic! I am intrigued and gasing hard for the Eclipse version. I have sold a few pieces of gear with the intention of buying one, I just haven't pulled the trigger yet. I want to have both in the same room and decide which one to keep. I have high hopes for the Eclipse!

I think with your 100w, switching between channels might've helped, but the 50w had a significant drop in volume when going clean. The saturation and gain character was amazing tho. What speakers did you run? I had the combo and it was really sweet with the Alnico Cream.

How'd you like the 100w vs the 50w? I think if I wanted both a killer clean tone and great overdrive/distortion, the 100w wins hands down. For pure dirt tones, the 50w sounded more aggressive and raw to my ears.

Edit: I might nab an eclipse once prices go down. I kinda shifted my focus into getting vintage players over amps. Keep me posted if you buy one!

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

For amps I've owned, it was my Marshall 2205 completely rewired by hand by Jeff Seal (RIP my friend) to the specs I wanted. To me it was glorious and I regret selling it.

Best I've heard in person?

Gearjonser's Bogner Extacy the night after SDUGD 05'. Jolly and I spent the night at Joe's house.
Gearjonser's Silver Jubilee same night as above.
Splawn Quick Rod at Scott's shop in 2005
Two Rock of some sort the day after SDUGD in 05'.

What do I want to buy the most?

Friedman Runt 50
Spawn Quick Rod 50
Marshall JCM 800 2205
Marshall Silver Jubilee
Fender Deluxe Reverb

I play Classic Rock/80's Rock/80's Metal, 70's Rock, Blues Rock, etc.

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

The best I have ever played through was a Silver Face Fender Twin Reverb. It belonged to a friend of mine and introduced me to the great world of electric guitar. I was hooked. Fast forward to today, I play some blues, classic rock and P&W. The best amp I own is a 1964 Black Face Fender Deluxe Reverb. I don't gig with that one, but it has golden tone.

Soldano Avenger and JCM 900 SL-X are by far the best tone I have ever heard from an amp. Owned the latter, the former belonged to a buddy of mine. Played it once and was blown away.

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

For me, an early Silverface Bassman played loud with a boost. I always think about getting one, but it’s probably too loud for me now.
