Greenback in a Classic 30?

I've got a chance at picking up a Celestion Greenback for cheap. I've read where guys have installed them in their Classic 30's but I'm a bit leary. 30 watt amp, 25 watt speaker......you get the idea. Has anyone here tried this and if so what kind of results did you get? What kind of tone did you get from the OD channel? How about clean headroom? Right now I can turn the clean channels volume up to 6 with the stock speaker before it starts to get any breakup. Any info would help. Thanks.

It'll be just fine. The Greenback 25 is a fine speaker. It will improve the tone of most amps alot! There are other Celestions with more bass or a differant tone, but the Greenback is still a much better speaker than the vast majority of stock speakers that come with most amps. Go for it. Lew

And wouldn't the Greenback be rated at 25w British, while the Classic 30 would be 30w US? I'm not sure what the exact rule is, but I think that it does make a difference to a point...

Greenbacks were commonly married with 50W Marshalls, and 100W MArshalls as well. I don't think you have to worry!

Make sure it is 16ohms, though. That C30 transformer is a POS and an 8ohm speaker will eat it for lunch.

The 25W GREENBACK is not a great speaker for OPEN BACK cabinets... it is one of the best if not THE BEST for closed back cabinets...
I would suggest the G12H30 or a Vintage30...

Thanks for the help, guys. I think I'll pick up that Greenback and build myself a 1X12 cabinet with a closed back and experiment a bit.

Disconnect the internal wiring to the speaker (unplug the speaker and tape the connectors out of the way), then wire up the speaker to a 1/4" jack and run it from the amp's extension output instead. That's an 8 ohm tap.
