Greenie Humbucker Set

Has anyone tried the custom shop greenie set? If so what are your thoughts? Also I wonder if it would be hot enough to cross over to metal from time to time. I'm a classic rock/blues player but wouldn't want to limit myself.

i dont have any experience with those pups but id say if your amp has the gain then the greenie set can probably do metal. kirk hammett uses the original one with his band and makes it work

I would order it potted if you are going to use a lot of gain, though. Otherwise it would probably start squealing.

Re: Greenie Humbucker Set

I have the Greenie Set in a Gary Moore Les Paul Standard currently. I've also had them in a Dean Hardtails, which might be my preferred location of the two... so far. First and foremost, the Greenie Set is a fantastic set of PAF pickups. I don't know what pickups they're based on, but to my ears they have more bite and a bit more top end than the Antiquity. They really have a unique voice of their own.

The neck pickup is really clear and articulate, but warms right up with just a small roll of the tone knob. It does excellent clean tones and blues/rock leads. The bridge has nice crunch and bite without being thin. They are both pretty sensitive to height adjustment, so you will have to spend some time dialing them in.

I thought I would use the middle position more, and it is fun for some things and especially for clean picking and chord work, but what I really ended up with is a great set of PAF's that are voiced differently from Seth's and Antiquities but still hold true to the whole PAF thing.... of which there are hundreds of nuanced flavors. I would buy the set again, but not with the idea of using them for Peter Green tones.

Now, they WILL do Gary Moore tones and stand up to that very well. The heaviest stuff I play is some old school Metallica, Judas Priest and other 80's metal sounds. I haven't tried them for modern metal, but I think you could push them farther than I do, but they will give up clarity and tightness at some point of insane gain, I assume.

Re: Greenie Humbucker Set

Based on what I've read in the SD forums I'm probably the least qualified to comment on this post--however, I love the old Peter Green Fleetwood Mac stuff and also love the Gary Moore blues stuff. I have a set in my Oxblood 54 standard reissue (Jeff Beck Blow by Blow style) and I absolutely love them. My second disclaimer is that even though I've played Gibson humbuckers since the early 70's I've never been a fan of the both pickups on sound (even though tons of great players make it sound super) so this gives me an option that I do like to use for rhythm stuff and gives me a different sound pallet to use for other things, it puts you in mind of the strat in between position but is really not a substitute for a strat if that is what you are shooting for. Like Jeff_H above I think each pup on it's own sounds great. I ordered the slightly aged nickel finish which looks perfect with this guitar especially as I've got the neck pup installed as on the PG guitar with the screws closer to the bridge side.
Bottom line for me is that if the both pickup on position is a big part of your tone pallet then you should not consider these, but for me they are the pickup of choice on my favorite LP and will be with me until the day I kick the ole bucket!!
