Groove Tubes

Hey guys, I just replaced my JJ 6l6 tubes with GT6l6S tubes rating of 5. This last weekend played out with them ( 2nd weekend 4th,5th,and 6th shows with them ). Both Fri and Sat by the end of the show my tone was EXTREMELY midrange sounding. The first set they sounded great 2nd and 3rd set not so much. Does anyone use these tubes and how do they sound for you? Musicians Friend only gave them 2 stars should I have gone wth the
6l6R instead? By the way I play a Boogie Mark I, and that amp doesn't need to be biased.

Re: Groove Tubes

gt's S tubes are jj's like lf2100 said but tested and matched. the R tubes are sovteks and not my favorite. the jj tubes are pretty middy sounding, i prefer the gt6L6ge which have a more balanced tone to my ears

you are incorrect that your boogie mark I doesnt need to be biased. it isnt easy to bias as there is no bias pot but to sound its best the amp needs to have the bias checked and adjusted.

Re: Groove Tubes

yeah just rebias it

you basically just went from jj's to more expensive jj's, they should sound about the same

Re: Groove Tubes

NOt to hijack, but what are the 6L6's preferred for adding low end to my Traynor? Do they even make 6L6's that are good for low end production?

Also, even though my Traynor is self-biasing, would I still need to bias it if I'm chagning the tubes?

Re: Groove Tubes

6L6 as a whole tube family tend to have good bottom end.

if your power tranny will keep up kt66 tubes have a very big low end

Re: Groove Tubes

a real kt66 will draw more heater current. the way i test, and let some one who actually knows what they are doing confirm this is ok before you go trying it, is to check the heater voltage. it should be 6.3v or so. if its less than 6v then i dont use the tubes. i dont know who told me that but its what ive been doing for years and never had a problem

Re: Groove Tubes

Thanks jeremy! You always know all the answers around here. There's no way I'm trying it cuz I don't know what I'm doing. I will talk to my friend's dad, he's an ex-electrical engineer...

Re: Groove Tubes

and bias the tubes hot, the kt766 seem to always sound better that way. i think mine are around 50ma
