Ground wire?? Grounding question

Ive recently discovered that Im not grounding my guitars correctly when I rewire them. (Oddly, they all work fine) But, being the AR soul I am, I want to do it right..
What is the best thing to use? Something special or just a nice fine wire? Radio Shack has a thin (22 guage I think). I thought guage determined thickness, but they have 3 diff thicknesses of 22 guage.. I figure the thin would prob be enough..

I know about grounding the claw on a trem guitar, but on an LP style, where is the best place??

thanks

Re: Ground wire?? Grounding question

LPs have to be grounded on the bridge mounting poles. There is usually a channel drilled and the wire pre-installed from the factory. Ive never really found a fool proof way to reground an LP style bridge if the wire comes loose. If you can get the mounting socket out then you can do it but otherwise i dont know.

Re: Ground wire?? Grounding question

as for different types of wire...ive never noticed a difference.

Re: Ground wire?? Grounding question

+1 Scottish. On a Gibson LP the ground wire is a bare lone wire that comes from a small hole that leads to the tailpiece bushing. It usually connects to the neck volume pot.

Re: Ground wire?? Grounding question

If your guitars all work fine, I'd suggest you ARE doing it "right". Don't fix what ain't broke! :)

Even a one hundred per cent complete grounding circuit is no guarantee of one hundred per cent noise rejection.

The thickness IS the guage. Can't have 3 thicknesses of 22 guage. That's like saying you have 3 dif resistances of a 500k pot.

Almost any wire will work, 18 - 28 guage. 22 will work just fine. Stranded 22guage is best although even a paper clip will work.

probably thickness of insulation the wire gauge is the same

Re: Ground wire?? Grounding question

thanks all! yeah, they all "work" fine, but I live near radio towers, my amp is 3 ft from my computer. I get a load of noise. when I stop playing, I can hear radio.. When my kids where young, I told them dad was playing that. Then, the dj would break in... DOH!!!!! hahaha
I am going to get them grounded better cuz I know its not right.

I was mostly concerned about the LPs as I know ive had one that had no ground coming out.. Ill get the thinner stuff as the thick stuff he was trying to sell me was like an extension cord.. haha.

Thanks!!

Re: Ground wire?? Grounding question

shield your control cavities too....that can take out a lot of buzzing and stray DJ's
