Grounding issues

Ookay, I decided to turn my HsH config to a HH one..
I did put the pickups in and got this strange hum, like something was ungrounded, but it was a very little noise, and it dissapeared when I turned the guitar so that the strings were facing the roof..

It was the bridge pickup, my PA-TB2.

WTF was that? It dissapeared when I unsoldered the bare wire from the ground and isolated it.. Strange, I'd say. Could someone enlighten me on this phenomenon? Why did the hum dissappear when I turned the guitar? Is it posessed? :saeek:

Re: Grounding issues

the hum was being induced onto your guitar signal when the orientation of the pickups was maximized with respect to the source ... i am going to go out on a limb and say that you were in proximity of a flourescent light or a computer monitor ... if you oriented the guitar so that the source of the noise was 'broadside' to the pickups, it would be loudest .. if you rotate the guitar so that the source is orthogonal to the field of the pups, it would disappear

i might be overly cautious, but i'd recommend that you hook the ground wire back up properly, and see about some extra shielding if need be ... i'd be nervous that your palm, resting on the bridge/tailpiece would be a shock hazard ... hopefully i'm wrong about that

good luck

Re: Grounding issues

Odd.. nothing like that was near me.. this freaks me out.. my guitar is bound to be poseessed.. and it works fine without the bare wire detached, only the green one is soldered to ground.. No shocks yet. It's now humless and sounds good. I even tested the hum in a nother room, wich didn't have any electromagnetical devices, either.. I even turned off the lights.. Could it have been the other pickup?

Re: Grounding issues

Now you've got me curious, because coincidentally I just re-attached the bare wire on my H-S-S Strat this weekend. I assume by the "bare wire" you mean the sheilding wire that contacts the foil and envelops the other 4. Wonder if my axe is humming .:omg:..(hard to tell with those drums pounding, you know?)
