Grounding Question...

I'm sure that my rig (MIM Strat->Peavey Classic 30) has a grounding issue. No matter what pickup combination I have selected there is an amplified buzz that goes away when I touch anything metal. After searching I discovered this is a grounding problem. Since I'm swapping electronics soon, I can deal with it.

My question is, is it possible the grounding issue is coming from either the amp or cable? Or is it definetly the guitar?

Re: Grounding Question...

It's definitely the guitar. The fact that the buzz goes when you touch a metal part shows that the earth circuit is intact and working. it's not a grounding problem whoever told you that!

What you have is a screening (shielding) issue. There is insufficient screened cable inside the guitar's control cavity and all this unscreened cable is acting as an aerial and picking up electromagnetic radiation in the r/f spectrum from surrounding equipment. There is a lot more of this around than there was when Leo invented the strat...

Get your guitar professionally screened; you'll see a dramatic improvement in the signal/noise ratio.
