GT5 vs. GT3

I have a GT5 that i use purley as an effects engine for my rig to get chorus, flange, delay, etc... and its real cool cuz I don't have to haul a lot of separate effects pedals around... just one big one But I don't use a lot of whats on it and some of the effects are just for one-off spots. I like the multi-pedal idea but I think i don't use enough of the stuff on it. Plus the way the patch switching is set up kinda weirds me out. I think the GT3 may be better for me.

For those who have tried both, what do you think? Of you can recommend an alternative, please do.

the gt-5/6, i'd say. I use a rack mount version, the GP-100, which has an amazing array of effects. Don't get weirded out, just learn to program it to get unique sounds. If you have the GT5 already, don't worry about not using everything on it. You may need to one day- just sit down with it (for short periods of time, many times) and pour through the manual to figure out how to craft sounds. You will come up with stuff no one has ever heard before, and that is the fun part.

I have played with all 3 GT units extensively, and I own the GT3, tho I have a confession to make: I only use it as a mute control and tuner!!

The FX engines on all 3 are excellent, and the modeling is quite good, tho not nearly as good as my VG 88 (no suprises there).

The reason I went with the GT3, tho is more functional: The GT3 has push buttons instead of analog knobs. While the knobs may give you a wider range and allow you to get tones you can't get when selecting arbitrary digital values (you can't select a gain of 22.7, for example, when you can only go from 22-23). I had visions of the knobs being smashed as I went from gig to gig.

Now, everyone I know that has a GT5 or GT6 has said that they've never felt that the knobs would be smashed, but they're not taking any chances, either. I, for one, am kinda rough with my gear, and tend to throw it around, so I went with the GT3.

I'm not worried about programming it or getting sounds out of it, I'm just concerned that I'm wasting space and time (and tone) dodging all the stuff that i don't need in the GT5. And I DO like the GT3's button setup better.
