guess the pick up

Papersoul has been asking me to send in some clips of the pickups on my LP guitars. So instead of just emailing him the link I thought maybe might be of use maybe to someone here.

They were all recorded on the same amp with same neutral settings. What I am playing sucks but I wanted to lay it down as quick as possible because I have no air conditioning and I am melting here. Plus... I am working on my comeback to Vegas and making up with Priscilla.

Re: guess the pick up

I am going to guess the second clip is the EMGs...but I am most familiar with the BB Pros so it is hard for me to detemrine.

My tech took my LP back to Standard stock set up. It sounds
amazing. The tone is rich, creamy, warm, complex, versatile.....I can go from clean to classic crunch to heavy modern rock and singing leads with no harshness!
He spent a while EQing the picksup and they balance perfectly. The bridge is
about 3/32" or more and the neck is about 4/32" or more. I was running them
too high!! They sound FAT. I am loving the BB Pros.

lol...the clips were labeled. The Fillimores sounded great with the AC/DC stuff but not so good on the intro part. The EMG's sounded great accross the board while the BB's were my least fav.

Great job BTW!

Re: guess the pick up

How can i get these links to play? I click on the link and it just opens up a site that never loads and it's just blank. I REALLY want to hear these clips!!!

Re: guess the pick up

Crap your right. The name does show up ah well......
Anyway Bluesguy just click on link and right click on the link and save to your desktop.
I felt the Fillmores weren't as aggressive as the BB Pros or EMG's. They were more focused. BTW the intro on 1 was the Fillmore in ther neck position.

I agree that the EMG performed well across the board. The lead tho is quite hi (trebly) under normal circumstances I would lower the tone. But for this test everything was set same.

I actually liked the BB Pros. I tell ya this the BB Pros get harmonics, pinch harmonics etc screaming with ease. Better then the EMGs. The BB's have quite a bit of squealing with the amp tho'.

ACDC wise... again EMGs did well. BB Pros seem a bit abrasive not a bad thing. And Fillmores did well.

I liked the BB Pro clips and the EMG clips the most after quite a few listens. To me the BB Pros sounded very balanced and rich. I couldn't decide between the BB Pros and EMGs as I liked 'em both for different reasons. These clips actually make me very happy I am keeping my LP stock. I can also see how some amp EQing could get each pickup even closer to the other. I wasn't crazy about the Fillmore clips. It's difficult to determine with MP3s but I have good PC speakers. Thanks bro.........this was nice of you to post.

I really don't get much squeeling with the BB Pros, but they do pinch harmonics, natural harmonics and heavy rhythms well. I can't believe they are low output pickups. I can't get enough of 'em.

You say your BB Pros are a bit abrasive? How high are they set? My bridge p'up is a little over 3/32" from the strings and I find both the neck and bridge, smooth and articulate.

I thought Fillmores and EMG (1 and 3) were very cool. I actually wasn't too fond of the BBs. If you held a gun to my head I'd pick the EMG clips as my overall favorite. I played EMG81 for over 15 years so I guess they still do something for me! The EMGs sounded great doing the AC/DC.

How do you like that LP Zakk model? I am really thinking of picking up that new Camo model with the maple fingerboard. Great job.

Re: guess the pick up

Funny RGN I actually thought the EMG 81 sounded the best as ACDC. BTW it not the Zakk model just the Zakk EMG pup set. I listended to your clip on the thread you just started. Damn that is tough man. Seriously tough. I winged it and went with my instinct.
Papersoul by abrasive I don't mean bad. but your right I was surprised by how the BB Pros do with heavy rhythms. Thinking of keeping the BB neck and maybe putting a JB or CC, Custom in bridge. If I ever figure that one out ha!

Re: guess the pick up

I like the BB best, they sounded more complex to me. The EMG were just too agressive and the filmores less subtle. Breo

Re: guess the pick up

True.... Igotta agree with that. The BB's are complex. There are overtones of chunk, vintage paf, etc.

Re: guess the pick up

Was the Zakk clip recorded with the 81 bridge? I'd LOVE to hear that same clip and amp EQ settings recorded with the 85 bridge which most seem to think gives a thicker and warmer tone.

Did you have the 18 volt mod on this guitar?

Re: guess the pick up

All sound good!!
I found the bb the best. The fillmore has a lack of something imo (i guess highs) but still fine
the emg is a bit electronical imo i would call it lack of "balls" or maybe too perfect

Re: guess the pick up

I definitely like the emg's out of those first. I have the same set as well. Then soon after are the BB's and the fillmore's were just a little too bright and shrill for my tastes.

Are these clips still available? I have the BB Pros but it was recommended I try the Fillmores.
