guilty blues junior pleasures.

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

All the clips on the BillM page sound like crap - I wish somebody would make different clips for that site!

Agreed. The stock sounds much much better on the site.

I'm going to replace the filter caps, put a 12AY7 and AT7 in, new EL84s, and a more efficient speaker. And a better jack.

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

Hi, I'm new, and I'm buying a BJ (not that kind, jeez) next month or so. I'll be playing a new, stock SG Classic (P-90s) through it and was wondering if anyone has used this combo or has this combo before? Or anything similar, for that matter.

I did play another Classic through one at GC a few months ago, but didn't get near enough time to really hear it.

Anyway, I'm gonna be modding the hell outta my SG and most likely the new amp along with it. What's the consenus on the Eminence Wizard or Tonker speaker(s)?

I play P90's (Reverend Warhawk 290) right now through my Blues Junior, and it sounds really really great. Nice crunch at high volumes, but with a nice clean tone, too. I think the P90's give it a lot of clarity, never muddy. As for your speaker, not sure, as I'm looking for a good American voiced speaker.

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

Ooo, so there are BRITISH AND AMERICAN VOICED SPEAKERS
Mannnnn...
Alright.
I dunno what to do anymore
I've heard a lot of people going with the Weber Blue-Dog. Reviews on that?

What 'style' of speakers are good with the BJ. i.e, Alnico?

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

I think it's best to approach the question from the direction of what tone do you want?

again, with a full tone stack, FAT switch, and master volume, it's very tweakable

although both the Pro and Blues Juniors are somewhat in the lineage of a Champ 600, the EL 84s give them a Marshally voice with the right speaker ... and yes, of course speakers have American and British voices .... the typical American tone being the Jensen and other speakers used in vintage Fenders, and British tone being the Celestions and other speakers used in vintage Marshall and Vox amps.

the differences are explained by Eminence and Weber, who make speakers voiced both ways

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

Okay, i want a typical american tone then.
I've always been a fan of the blackface fendery sounds and that's what i'm aiming for.
I KNOW the Blues Junior will never be a blackface fender, but it's closer than say a Vox ac15.

What BillM mods do you guys suggest. I think maybe the Tone stack and Twin stack?

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

Okay, totally into the Weber speakers right now. I'd be wanting to look at their vintage range right. Which is the american voiced speakers. Which are the original Fendery Jensen speakers.
What would i want. I really don't know the differences
I read the P12Ns are good?

P-90s are the win for great justice. I like to think of it a combo at McDonalds. The #1 being a 490R/498T, and the #2 being P-90s which is basically the same, but with more bottom-end, no mud and a little bit of hum. Which is exactly how I like it.

That's exactly why I like them. Never been a humbucker fan, as they are too muddy for me, but the P90s offer a nice output (maybe even more than some hums) and retain single coil clarity.

I'm with benbenben, I'm looking for an efficient Blackface Fender-y type speaker.

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

OEM Gibson P-90s are higher output than the Burstbuckers and '57 Classics, just as the old Gibby P-90s were/are higher output than the old PAFs and T-tops.

It's not much though, IIRC.

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

Can someone sorta just quickly summarise a british tone with an american tone?
Is the BJr an american voiced amp?
Just confused, cause if it's an american voiced amp, shouldn't you fit it with an american speaker? What will an american voiced amp, sound like with relaly british sounding speakers?

Usually American voiced amps have been Fenders, Ampegs, Musicman(s), etc. Stuff with 6L6/6V6. The typical speaker would be a Jensen. British voicing is EL84, EL34, KT66 and other tubes I'm forgetting, and Celestion speakers. Vox, Marshall, Matamp/Orange, etc. If there are any I'm forgetting, I'm sure someone will fill us in.

Technically, 'cause the Blues Junior has EL84s, with the right speaker and a few tone mods, you can get a very British classic rock sound out of it. I'm looking to use a high efficiency speaker with some lower gain preamp tubes to get more of an American twist on the british sound. I rarely really crank my amp, I usually keep it clean or barely distorted.

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

typically EL34's and the like tend to give out more Upper mids and highs. those were more readily available in england when those amps were built. which is why british amps are more bright sounding.

6L6's are more of a flatter sounding tube.

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

not technically ... there are other things you can to to tame those tones. it's more of the circuit that predicts the voicing. You can get it to sound more british than american.

I said "typically" ... it's not a hard and fast rule

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

I want some British voicing when I get mine... ooh, can't wait.

Good writeup, Rush.

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

Okay, i emailed the dude at Eurotubes. I think i'm not going to do the BillM mods. Bob at Eurotubes is not such a big fan, and after reading and thinking about it, it's probably not worth the effort.
I'm just going to go for a speaker and tube change. i MAY even think about a Weber Micro Mass. Anyone got experience with these attenuators. Is it worth getting one for a Blues Junior?

Bob recommended a full retube with a matched pair of JJ EL84's and three ECC83S's ( one balanced for the Phase splitter ). Speaker change to a Silver Bell 30 watt in 8 ohms. He said he likes these better than the Jensen Webers.

What you guys thinking?
