guitar-->a preamp-->orange TT=?

hi amp gurus i have a noob idea

wot if i run another high gain preamp in front of my orange tt , set the gain on the TT low, crank the volume....would that give a nice distorted sound from the preamp being saturated by the power tubes in the tt?

:scratchch

Re: guitar-->a preamp-->orange TT=?

I've placed a Fulltone OCD pedal in front of the TT set to clean. Sounds good, but not as good as the TT alone with the gain cranked. Of course, that's only one sort of OD/Dist device - plenty of others exist.

I've also put various boosters in front of the TT when its gain is mildly cranked (set to 2 o'clock). Wow!

Re: guitar-->a preamp-->orange TT=?

Pedals in front are cool, but I think a preamp would have the wrong type of output (impedance mismatch or something) for plugging into the front end of a combo. It would probably "work", but it might damage the TT :(

I dont have enough experience to know for sure...

Re: guitar-->a preamp-->orange TT=?

I don't think you'd get much overall volume out of the TT... and most preamps want to see a line level input like a power amp, not a guitar amp... so it might not sound very good either.

But 'ya know... if the gear is laying around hook it up & find out for yourself!

BTW ~ Power tube saturation only happens when the amp is screaming... hitting the front end hard just overloads the front end. Doesn't mean the back end will give up and compress.

Thats what hes trying to do - gain it up on the outboard preamp, then into the TT with input gain set low, but output dimed to get the power amp working.

I think.

exactly. so does anyone know if the signals would mess up things?

Re: guitar-->a preamp-->orange TT=?

The whole reason the Tiny Terror exists is so that you can have a low-volume but still very heavy gainy tone in one package. The best option for getting more gain out of it would be to use a simple overdrive.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish with this set-up? That'd probably help us. Your description makes it sound like you want your preamp's overdrive with the Tiny Terror's poweramp OD...which you would probably be able to do the way you posted...

i think you explained it pretty well.

i want to have more gain on this monster and i really like the fact that it's quiet it's sweet sounding, also with the low wattage, it gives nice saturation at acceptable volumes.

if the preamp signal is compatible with the TT normal input, like external preamp-->tt preamp-->tt poweramp-->cab would be awesome, it makes TT do anything. i somehow feel a normal overdrive pedal doesn't deliver high gain stuff well enough, that's why im looking to see if preamp would work better. of course assuming the preamp stage in TT does not mess up the tone from the external preamp.

Well, the TT will mess up the preamp... basically stacking a preamp on top of a preamp... it'll get noisy. The natural low-volume saturation of the TT is from the TT preamp... not the power tubes... and simply turning pre down & post amp won't yield saturation.

Get a little tube power amp... or have the TT modded for an FX loop and plug the preamp into the return, bypassing the TT preamp.
