Guitar Amp Head Speaker Output Test

I am repairing a Hughes and Kettner Vortex 80 amp head for my friend at work. He believes that the speaker outputs on the back are not working. Is there any way that I could test these outputs without a speaker cab? I sold all of my cabs years ago and I don't really want to buy a new one at the moment. Your help would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: Guitar Amp Head Speaker Output Test

do you have a speaker, a 1/4" jack and some wire?

Re: Guitar Amp Head Speaker Output Test

I have a 1/4" Jack and wire. The only guitar speaker I have is the speaker in my Marshall MS-2 practice amp.

Re: Guitar Amp Head Speaker Output Test

any speaker will really work since you are just testing. i used to have a 6x9 car speaker on my bench

Re: Guitar Amp Head Speaker Output Test

Should I test it at low volume so I don't blow the speaker?

Definitely don't start wide open. I would guess full volume could blow the practice amp speaker. Also, completely disconnect the speaker from the practice amp otherwise you will be dumping the power "backwards" into the practice amp which could damage it.

may want to add some quotes around "repairing"

sorry bro couldn't resist

Re: Guitar Amp Head Speaker Output Test

Thanks for the help. I usually don't deal with amps. I am more of a pedal guy as a lot of forum members know from my pedal repair service I offer in the trading post.

Re: Guitar Amp Head Speaker Output Test

that speaker wont take much volume at all so keep the amp very low

Re: Guitar Amp Head Speaker Output Test

You're not doing your friend any favors if you don't have a proper cab to test his amp with. Worst case scenario, you blow your speaker and his output transformer in one fell swoop.

Re: Guitar Amp Head Speaker Output Test

This is a Solid State amp so there isn't an output transformer. Would this still need a dummy load or speaker to test it?

Re: Guitar Amp Head Speaker Output Test

Friend of mine had the same trouble with his head
The connection for the tip of the jack had bent over time
He tripped over it most likely
Bent it back and it was fine
Check also the effects loop jack
And lastly the cable he is using

Re: Guitar Amp Head Speaker Output Test

Well he didn't tell me the whole story so when I opened it up I found two blown fuses. One on each secondary output of the power transformer. I am going to check to see if the power transistors are bad. I have a background in electronics so fixing this won't be an issue just wasn't sure of the best way to test it when I'm done.
