Guitar build frustration - builder flakes out!

So over the past few months I've been waiting patiently for a friend of a friend who's built gibson style axes before build an SG for me....Maple Body, Maple neck jumbo frets one pickup deal, really simple...

well this evening he calls me and tells me he just doesn't have the time to do the build for me, said he would take the loss and return the cash I've put into the build so far, I have no clue if he ever even started the build, I'm going to get my refund tomorrow on the way to work, just extremely pissed because I've skipped over buying a few really nice things because I was planning on putting that cash into the build...

The other huge bummer is the SG he made my friend is absolutely awesome, he did an amazing job and that's why I was anticipating this guitar so much,

Anything like this ever happen to any of you guys? I'm still reeling over here, lol......

Use that money and invest the time, tools and effort into making your own.

or find another excellent luthier.

It was probably his friendship for the other guy that motivated him to finish the other guitar. When he was faced with doing it for "money", it probably didn't have the same appeal, and he probably wouldn't have done the same job.

This kind of **** happens, I would be understanding and maybe take the opportunity to become better friends with the builder. He may be able/willing to do less time intensive work for you in the future like wiring or frets.

Perhaps you should put aside what you want from him and try to see things from his perspective, rather than trying to be friends with him just to get something out of him. Like Top_L said, if he ain't into it, he ain't into it.

Buy one of those all maple SG's they made a while back a go crazy.

Re: Guitar build frustration - builder flakes out!

An all maple SG is something Gibson would get bashed for doing. There's a reason they use mahogany/rosewood on a thin body guitar.

There's no law, but that's my 2 cents.

Yeah, check out the Raw Power SG's. They were all maple. Unfortunately, they only made them for one year. So I'm not sure how many are out there for sale. But keep checking Evil-Bay. One may pop up.

Re: Guitar build frustration - builder flakes out!

Is this person someone who builds guitars regularly? If they've only done a handful of builds, chances are you could get a better quality guitar built elsewhere.

Re: Guitar build frustration - builder flakes out!

I can't tell you how many horror stories I've read of people commissioning a guitar from a small builder and never getting either the guitar or their money back.

You got the long end of the stick, dude. Congratulations haha

Cottage industry with one skilled laborer can and badly, quickly. Guitars, gunstocks, portraiture....if one person prides themselves on their work and word gets out, that person will see saturation hit really fast. Sucks, really. Lots of good people born out fast.
