So, Guitar Center is kicking off its 2006 version of Guitarmaggedon, and focusing on the blues. Contestants will play to a backing track playing one of five amps:

Marshall DSL100 half stack
Fender 1965 Deluxe Reverb Re-issue combo
Crate V-32 Palomino 112 combo
Line 6 Flextone IIIXL 212 combo
Fishman Loudbox Acoustic amp

Which one would you pick to play through, and why?

Re: Guitar Center's King of the Blues: Which Amp?

If your using a Strat then i would say go for the Fender Deluxe if u want the vintage traditional sound.
But i'd also consider the Flextone as from my experience it can pull off some authentic blues tones, thanks to pretty good modelling of the Fender amps it does, especially the Bassman and also some interesting models of Matchless and the JTM45 amps.
Haven't played the others.

Re: Guitar Center's King of the Blues: Which Amp?

This basically depends on what is passable as BLUES? I've watched these contests B4 where a guy goes up, plugs into a high gain amp. Then starts playing a blues lick. Next thing ya know he's playing Blackmore like licks,Then heading into almost Satch like shred? Then he finishes with a blues lick. And is anointed the Winner? Impressive display of guitar playing,Yes. Blues? I DUNNO?:chairfall Myself... I guess I would pick the DRRI and just play my soul.:smokin:

Re: Guitar Center's King of the Blues: Which Amp?

NONE of the above. I shudder to think of what the backing track sounds like.

Re: Guitar Center's King of the Blues: Which Amp?

How loud can you crank things????

The Marshall & Fender might not sound that great at the lower volumes.

I played a Palomino at GC & it was a very VERY nice amp.....sweet blues tone. But make sure it's off the ground if it's just running thru the 1x12. Maybe they'll let ya' run it thru a 4x12????

Maybe try the Palomino & the Line 6 before the contest.....the Line 6 might allow you that saturated tone at the lower volumes....maybe a good JTM45 patch????? :bigthumb:

Whatever you choose, break a leg Brother!!! :beerchug:

Re: Guitar Center's King of the Blues: Which Amp?

i was approched about playing in that around here. i told the guy that if i do it, im gonna use the dlx reverb pinned so they might wanna use a plexi glass drum shield.

in general i hate these type of things, so if i do it i might have a few drinks, ask the audience what track they wanna here and then play for four minutes.

as the firebird wielding long islander said, im not sure what is gonna pass as blues. id rather be a judge. ive been on the board of directors of the north east blues society for years and our jam has been running for more than 10 years.

Re: Guitar Center's King of the Blues: Which Amp?

I haven’t played all the amps listed, but I do know that the DSL100 will not get you there. The clean channel needs to be pushed pretty hard before it gives you a bluesy mild breakup that doesn’t sound like complete poop. Even still, it’s clean tone lacks the complexity that you’d find in the Fender Reverb.

Re: Guitar Center's King of the Blues: Which Amp?

Hmmmmm, I'd go for the DSL. The guy from Los Lonely Boys gets some killer tones through his DSL IMO.

Re: Guitar Center's King of the Blues: Which Amp?

Either the Deluxe or the Palomino. If you use the Palomino use the clean channel and turn it up a bit.

I trust GC to have a handle on the Blues much in the same way I trusted the House Of Blues to have a handle on the Blues.

Just consider the judging...and think what if some kid that walked in and was the embodiment of Albert King....how would he do?

He wouldn't make it past the first round.....

It's all horse****...

Yeah.

I've debated entering just for the hell of it. Chances are I wouldn't make it outta the first round becase I haven't practiced my spaghettios in eons...

Still...I might do it. It could be a good way to kill an afternoon at some point in the future.

Re: Guitar Center's King of the Blues: Which Amp?

This is gonna be an event of one of the biggest mishmashes of Stevie Ray Vaughnabees EVAR.

...that being said I might actually do this. I'm just kinda gonna go with my space-blues/rock'n'blooze style of playing and see what happens. It could be fun. Then again who knows. The judges are highly subjective in this competition and IMO have made some pretty dumb judgments in the past two competitions I've viewed.

Maybe I'm just past the point in my playing where I care about who can outshred who. The fact that it's blues-based now is an interesting twist though. Let's see what happens.

My friend told me about this, it seems like fun...and out of those amps I'd choose the Deluxe cranked for some nice bluesy distortion with my Strat.

Hard to say without hearing the backing track. It the tune called for a nice cleanish type of tone I think the DR would be the choice for me, but if the tune called for clean and drive I would probably go with the DSL

Re: Guitar Center's King of the Blues: Which Amp?

I think BB King would sound just like BB King if he played through any of those five amps cuz there's no such thing, IMO, as a blues amp.

I agree with Jeremy though. I'll vote for the Deluxe Reverb. Why? Because I own two of the originals and love 'em! I'll never let them go.

But there should be a Fender 5F6-A Tweed 4 x 10 Bassman on that list...
