Guitar finish question

Does anybody have this problem with some guitars where your forearm just sticks to the body of the guitar and you can't run freely around the 6 strings?

I think I'm not putting pressure on the body because I dont have a problem with satin finish guitars. Any advice on how to fix it? Is the finish of the MIM strat nitro?? really don't want to sand the body. Any other finishes you guys prefer?

Maybe is the sweat syndrome on my arms, kind of funny that my hands don't sweat as much lol

Re: Guitar finish question

Yes, this happens on shiny finishes here in Florida. I always have to wipe it down if I am performing. I keep a rag and some guitar polish by my guitar stand to keep that stuff from building up.

Re: Guitar finish question

To me it happens even if it's cold lol I'll try an antiperspirant and a sports sleeve. Ill probably end up getting lazy and purchase a satin finish guitar or sand my Strat lol.

Re: Guitar finish question

This is actually a reason why I like satin-finished guitars, or guitars with a texture to the finish, like my Music Man.

Nice guitar! I'll do the same. Just have to search for the right guitar that comes with that finish or if it's gloss just sand it.

I think it won't be hard? Or I have take the electronics out and solder them back? Oh wait how about just removing the gloss with steel wool and keep the paint instead of the natural finish?

Just to be clear, the antiperspirant comment was a joke. I have no idea whether it would help or if whatever is in that stuff would hurt the finish. Probably not, if it's poly, but you never know.

Re: Guitar finish question

The finish on an MIM strat is poly and probably very thick, not what you would want to attack with a sander.
If it’s that big of s problem id look for a satin guitar or nitro finished strat or something along those lines. I hate poly finishes.

Re: Guitar finish question

Lol I thought you weren't joking. I don't think it will hurt the finish, it's like putting lotion on and will stop the sweat.

Yeah it does look thick. Are all inexpensive guitars like that? My gio that I sold had that finish.

Ill probably just use steel wool.

Re: Guitar finish question

Got this from the fender forum. American Strats are polyurethane and Mexicans have polyester bodies with polyurethane necks.

So probably that's why the neck is not sticky as the body on how my skin reacts to both of the finishes.

Re: Guitar finish question

I’ve seen guys use a sweat band around their forearm to help the sliding. As a bonus it does double duty to wipe the sweat off of your forehead.

Re: Guitar finish question

Well, since we aren't concerned about the finish ... if antiperspirant doesn't work, go the other way. Spray the part of the guitar that is problematic with cooking spray. Better yet, grease it up with bacon grease.

Re: Guitar finish question

Like everyone said, it happens with glossy finishes although it will vary from finish to finish.

To me it happened the most with my nitro-finished guitar in the beginning (i.e. before the nitro had cured 100%).

Usually I just wear a long cotton arm band where my arm usually rests on the guitar, keeps my arm free and the guitar clean, plus, it helps with guitars that have no elbow-cut!

I use a double length wristband. They work pretty well and I've amassed a sizable collection by adding one to every Amazon order lately. I do find that I have to adjust them slightly if I use a 335 instead of a strat or les paul.
