Guitar harmonizers. Any suggestions?

Hey fellas,

Well, there aren't many harmonizers in my price range. I could only find the Boss PS-5. The rest are above $2000, definately out of my range!

Do you guys use one, or you just find a friendly guitarist to harmonize with you? :)

Thanks

I use the PS-5 but it only sounds good in the loop. Only use in front if you are using two amps. That pedal has a lot of other neat tricks... particularly the detune feature, which makes for a great chorus substitute.

The other low end alternative is the Digitech Whammy. I have never used one, but there are so many different versions, I have found just too confusing to get involved with it at all.

Re: Guitar harmonizers. Any suggestions?

I have a boss PS-3 and PS-2 . . . they do a good job of tracking single notes and an OK job with chords. Just don't try to do more than an octave apart and it sounds OK.

I have the Digitech red whammy. I really like it and think its sounds great. I mostly only use it during RATM covers tho...

Re: Guitar harmonizers. Any suggestions?

i have the cheesy harmonizer in my Boss ME-30 effects pedal. word of advice: the cheap harmonizers sound horrible. this is due to the fact between the notes of a scale E and F; and also B and C there is only 1/2 note change. So unless you get a good harmonizer that you can tell it what key the portion of the song you want to play is in, you are always going to hit notes that are out of tune. a good octavizer pedal is reasonably cheap and will do what you want imo.

Re: Guitar harmonizers. Any suggestions?

See if you can find a used Rocktron IntelliPitch. They've been discontinued for years but they are definately cool for used $$$.

Re: Guitar harmonizers. Any suggestions?

I dont mean to hi-jack the thread by, why in the world do harmonizers get so expensive!?

Also, could someone point out a song that has made good use of a harmonizer.

I had a cheap one for doing harmonized leads but I always ended up just doing second lead track during recordings and I just never thought it sounded good enough to do live (maybe cuz it was the cheap digitech one).

Ok so maybe I answered my own question..

Are more expensive ones able to be calibrated to which key you are playing? I just think that playing in a constant major 3rd or 5th just sounds so static. The only way I could imagine doing this live is in octaves and even then it would be used very little.

But again, could someone show me a song with good use of one?

I think most high end harmonizers let u choose which key and scale it is in so it keeps playing notes in perfect harmony.

If you want a harmonizer to sound like the Alman Bros, Thin Lizzy or Maiden, just get another guitarist. ;) If you want to sound like "owner of a Lonely Heart" or make some wild tripped out sounds, get a Harmonizer. The PS-3 is cool since it's a delay and pitch shifter, you can do cool pitch shifted delays.

There are a few on ebay. These have two voices vs. one voice on the PS-5

The PS-3 also has two voices for harmonizing . . . .
I thought the PS-3 was only a pitch shifter, not a harmonizer?

Thanks for the replies guys.. I ll check out the ones you suggested.

I think they are a cool effect to have if you are the only guitarist in the band.

You can add some depth and presence to your sound.
