Guitar humbucker sized bass pickups?

I've ordered my wonderful girlfriend a Daisy Rock Rock Candy bass, and I've called up our distributor (yeah, I work for a Daisy Rock dealer) to find out what pickups it's routed for. Apparently, the pickups it comes stock with are EMG Select SEHB which were designed for the Steinberg bass. EMG makes the HB active pickup as well, which would drop right into this bass, but... Well, all of my guitar's cept for one have Duncans in them, so I guess you could say I'm a big fan. :) I didn't notice anything on the site specifically for this purpose, but I have been known to be completely blind and miss things.

SD doesn't make active bass pickups? I thought I remembered seeing some in an old basslines catalogue.

Sorry, I should've been more clear. What I actually want isn't an active pickup, but a bass pickup that's the size of and mounts like a standard Gibson style humbucker. Like basically a '59 or JB or Custom Custom, but with only 4 pole pieces per coil and a winding optimized for bass, or something like that. I don't wanna go chopping the bass up to upgrade her pickups.

Re: Guitar humbucker sized bass pickups?

You could go with a Dimebucker or Bill Lawrence L500. They have rails that will allow any string spacing (or number for that matter) without dropout. They also are rather hi fi pups which would be preferable for a bass. If it's more than 4 strings though, I doubt that they'd be wide enough.

Re: Guitar humbucker sized bass pickups?

Oh yeah, I looked up about the bass you were talking about! It looks like they have active electronics, passive pups should work fine in them, and obviously this will give you're lady friend more control over the sound! Personally, I like ladies with a lot of bottom end myself! LOL

Re: Guitar humbucker sized bass pickups?

And now that I think about it, it might be a good idea to wire the pups in paralell instead of the stadard series, as to not get too powerful and for them to be lower in noise.

Re: Guitar humbucker sized bass pickups?

Cool. :) Thanks! So, you think a Dimebucker would actually sound good for bass?

Re: Guitar humbucker sized bass pickups?

I have a gut feeling it would, but I haven't tried it. The pups in my Kramer Beretta bass (musicyo) have rail pups in them that sound spectacular now that I've made a preamp and installed it. But it WILL work in your bass, I know that.

Cool. :) Thanks for the advice. The only thing I'm worried about is the winding being optimized more for the midrange of a guitar rather than the lows of a bass. You know how it works. Even with the best EQ in the world, still start off with a good core tone. :)

Re: Guitar humbucker sized bass pickups?

maybe.. it'll sound even more pushed.. more of a mid focused thumping bass sound, if you know what i mean. right in your face instead of in the background

i'd try an X2n or dimebucker if i was you

Re: Guitar humbucker sized bass pickups?

Yall need to lay off the dope or something...lol. A Dimebucker, X2N, L500 for bass? You need one of the Bassline Soapbar pickups.

That would be great, but I'm not keen on the idea of routing out the bass. :duh: I'm looking for a direct drop in replacement. I just had to route a Strat out for a bridge 'bucker, and I thank God that it's got a pickguard. :) This is a champagne sparkle finish, and I wouldn't want to screw it up.

Send Scott Miller a private message. I wrote him about a year ago on a similar question. I was wanting to replace the pickups in my Hamer Chapparal 12 string bass. He told me what the direct replacement soapbar was, but I can't remember.

Well, the direct replacement for this would be an EMG-HB. I like EMGs, but I just like Duncan a lot better. :-P The problem is that the original pickup is in the same exact enclosure that EMG uses for their guitar humbuckers. Since I don't want to modify the body of the instrument in any way at all, I figured there's gotta be another guitar humbucker sized bass pickup out there somewhere. :)

Hey, just wanted to let you know that the bass has come in, and it holds two surprizes. First, the thing is FRICKIN' AWESOME, regardless of the fact that it's champagne sparkle (kind of a chunky metallic with a pinkish hue). Secondly, it doesn't have the EMG Select SEHBs that I thought it was going to have, but rather it has what appear to be 35HZ without the EMG HZ logo. I haven't had a chance to plug it in, yet, but the thing feels awesome and has a nice unplugged tone and some majorly beefy hardware. I'd rock this thing, if it weren't pink. LOL
