Guitar Models or Model Styles Based On An Artist

Re: Guitar Models or Model Styles Based On An Artist

well with the king v you're kinda right, kinda as the first real king v sold was the KV1 signature guitar of dave mustaine, before the KV1 the guitar was called the double rhoads as it was a symmetrical version of the rhoads long wings, the first one was ordered by Dave linsk from overkill, that was when Robbin saw the guitar and ordered one too, it was nicknamed as king v for him but was only a custom order guitar until the KV1, Dave's sig that featured shorter wings lrs tuners and korina body wood, then all the other versions appeared.

Your King V timeline is a bit off. I've seen work orders referring to King Vs as early as 1985; these guitars have the shorter wings as Double Rhoads are quite rare. The KV-1 also wasn't the first Mustaine signature, that honor goes to the King V Pro from 1990. The KV-1 was introduced in 1996 after Caparison stopped making the MIJ Jackson guitars.

Thanks for getting to this before me, dystrust. I'm no expert, but Wikipedia says the following, which seems to warrant its inclusion here as Robbin's guitar:

wikipedia said:
The King V is an electric guitar made by Jackson Guitars based on the Gibson Flying V. The Jackson King V was originally designed for and named after Robbin Crosby of Ratt, his nickname being "King". Crosby popularized the guitar throughout the 80s. Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine eventually became the guitarist most identified with using this model. After creating a custom King V for Mustaine (completed October 10, 1986), the company later began mass-producing a Dave Mustaine Signature Series King V…

Double Rhoads(never in mass production)
The Double Rhoads was a symmetrical version of the Jackson Randy Rhoads with two longer horns, the first one was ordered from Overkill guitarist Dave Linsk. While the guitar was made, Ratt guitarist Robbin Crosby saw it and wanted a similar guitar.Jackson built him two, one red and one black (he later got his white DR).Circa 10 Double Rhoads' were built before the design was changed with smaller wings and became the King V, the first King V was silver with black bevels.

King V Custom (Custom Shop)
From start to 1985 this was the name for a King V with sharkfin inlays, neck binding and ebony fretboard. Pickup and bridge options were anything the purchaser wanted.

I wonder how Dave feels about playing the guitar of a "gay L.A. metal" band guitarist. I am sure it is just as tough to him as hiring guys from White Lion to play in Megadeth!

Hamer made a Glen Tipton back in the day but I forget the model name. It was the black/white pointy guitar....
Another guitar to note would be that asymmetrical double guitar made by Dean for Michael Angelo Batio...
The Jackson Death Angel is another one that comes to mind.

Re: Guitar Models or Model Styles Based On An Artist

Speaking of Hamer, there was also a hidden Jett Watson model that I don't think ever was mass produced, but could be bought from the custom shop.

Re: Guitar Models or Model Styles Based On An Artist

This is just dumb if you go with nicknames and other BS.

Kramer Nightswan = Vivian Campbell? That's just Vivian's sig model. Whooo Hooo.

EBMM = EVH? No, EDDIE, EVH, EDDIE VAN, or the Van Halen model, sure. But the Ernie Ball Music Man? No....

Give a first and last, or obvious last name period. Otherwise it's just a guitar a guy played.

Prince - Love Symbol (or whatever it was called).
When I had my shop ,there were two things I could guarantee would happen every week without fail.
A phone call askng " Mate, can you build me a Brian May guitar?"
And a phone call asking "Mate, can you build me a Prince guitar?"
It became an "in joke" with a lot of the regular customers. I still have mates who have to start a phone conversation with "Maaaaaate, can you build me a Priiiiiince guitar."

Cheers,PJ

Sorry, the concept as it is is more interesting than a mere list of signature models. If you want that you are welcome to start your own thread.

Re: Guitar Models or Model Styles Based On An Artist

Does not include "artist signature" models or "custom shop" models... these guitars have to be/were part of regular stock (not special stock).

6) Jackson Rhoads (Randy Rhoads)
7) Gretsch Chet Atkins, Country Gentleman (Chet Atkins)

14) Jackson Kelly (Bradford Kelly)
15) Music Man Petrucci (John Petrucci)
16) Music Man Steve Morse (Steve Morse)
17) Ovation Glen Campbell (Glen Campbell)

Sounds like artist signature model is a gray area. Not sure what makes these 'regular stock' - they are just popular signature models.

What about the Woodstock/tribute strat (a couple of them now)?
Gilmour, Clapton, Beck, SRV, Mayer, Eric Johnson, Buddy Guy strats? (Artist models, not signature)
The Charlie Christian Gibson ES-150 (special pickup installed)
Django Reinhardt / Selmer 'Gypsy' guitar
J5 triple telecaster (John 5; not a signature model)
Angus Young SG (3 different models)
Nancy Wilson Nighthawk
Gary Moore Les Paul Standard or Tribute
Kurt Cobain, Johnny Marr Jaguars
Merle Haggard Telecaster
Dave Mustaine Deans
Kurt Hammett / James Hetfield ESP
Robert Smith Schector
EVH Wolfgang
Paul Stanley Iceman
Ernie Ball St. Vincent
Jim Root Telecasters and Jazzmasters
Schector Synyster Gates
Ibanez George Benson

Re: Guitar Models or Model Styles Based On An Artist

- Superstrat is associated with 80s heroes, not just Eddie. The only thing he's associated with is the red/ black/ white stripe design.
- Paul Gilbert is not associated with Iceman (not Fireman). He's associated with the fake a-hole...I mean, f-hole. Paul Stanley had an Iceman siganture in the 90s.
- It's Jem, not Gem.
- I don't know about the Music Man models for Petrucci and Steve Morse. They are just regular Music Man standard shape, no?

Re: Guitar Models or Model Styles Based On An Artist

Aren't we doing a 'specific shape' thread here. I mean I don't think any V would qualify. Nor would the Jem - isn't that pretty much just the standard Ibanez super strat shape??

Re: Guitar Models or Model Styles Based On An Artist

In 1988 Gibson released 3 models designed for Chet Atkins.
The Tennessean, the SST and the Phasar.
The Phasar is quite possibly the ugliest guitar to come out of Gibson.
I've only played one Tennessean and it was very nice.
I've played a couple of SST's and they are killer.

Re: Guitar Models or Model Styles Based On An Artist

The Paul Staney is a great example -

It's an Ibanez "Iceman" and Stanley had a Signiture Iceman. Emphasis on "ICEMAN"

It's a bold frickin' statement when they call the guitar say, the PAUL GILBERT - not the FIREMAN.

Re: Guitar Models or Model Styles Based On An Artist

OMG, you are right. This is design fail. I wonder if Chet ever used it?

If he is lucky he never even knew they made it....
