Guitar 'n Bass Speakers in 4X12 Cab

My new configuration:

Marshall 1960B straight front cab with:

2 Celestion G12s50 12" 50 watt speakers (8 ohm)

2 Eminence Basslite 2012 12" 150 watt speakers (w/ neodymium magnets, also 8 ohm)

...putting them in the cab in an "x" pattern. (wired in series-parallel for 8 ohm operation)

Should be pretty interesting, has anyone ever tried anything like this? I'll take some pics and post them later, I'm putting the cab together as we speak.

HOPEfully, I'll be running an axe fx ultra through a Fryette 2/90/2 power amp into this cab, sometime in the distant future.

that does sound interesting. whats the frequency response curves look like on those emis? ever consider putting the emis on bottom and the g12s on top? keep us updated

This makes more sense to me since bass frequencies are more omnidirectional. Interesting idea though.

hmmm...I might just do it that way instead, that does make more sense now that you mention it. I am just now taking a break before putting the speakers in, just got the baffle back in the front of the cab :)

X patterns are useful if you find identical top speakers a bit too bright, or want to mix the tones in a more dispersed fashion.

Mid or treble focused speakers up top and bass down bottom is a pretty classic configuration, though.

Sometimes see the reverse, if the mid/treble heavy speakers are too bright or harsh at ear level (but still necessary for the overall sound).

The g12s50's are pretty bright and biting, thats why I originally thought of the x pattern. Besides, I dont think enough real bass frequencies will come out of my guitar though the bass speakers to make them really omnidirectional, know what I mean?

What amp/s will you be powering the speakers with?

A Fryette 2/90/2 rackmount power amp, with an axe fx ultra as the preamp.

I might try it out with my Blackheart BH100H hothead, but hopefully I can sell that this week. $500 bucks, great condition if anyone is interested, the same one as in my previous post about it.

I wasn't the one bringing up bass being omnidirectional, though even lower mids are less directional than high frequencies.

For guitar, it's the mids that dominate, so pointing the speaker with the mid to upper mids that you want to hear most at you tends to work well. Except when it doesn't. My point was really that there's a lot of configurations that work, depending on what you are doing and what you like to hear.

Really hard to say, the 1960 b cab is actually at almost as much of an angle as a 1960 a, plus the cab will be in a live-in road case with 4 inch casters, I'm eager to hear it. Thanks for all the input and suggestions though, really helps and I appreciate it man! :headbang:

Ok fellas, one more question before I get 'er all screwed down:

If I was to dime a 100w head into this 4x12 cab (I would never do this, this is hypothetical lol)...then each speaker would receive 25w of power (25% of the wattage load placed on the cab) right? If it's wired for 8ohms in series-parallel.

I guess what I am asking is that if the cab is wired for series-parallel, and matching ohms (8), then each speaker will always receive 25% of the wattage going into the cab from the amp, correct?

Right.

Re: Guitar 'n Bass Speakers in 4X12 Cab

Seems like it should work pretty well. Isn't this the same idea as that Randall cabinet with 2x12 and 1x15? I'd like to try one of these myself as I played a 2x15 bass cabinet with guitar amps for 6 months or so with success. Not enough high end but the low end was brutal.

not exactly, a cranked 100 watter actually puts out 150+ watts. Otherwise smack on
