Re: Guitar Neck Preferences - Please Vote!

It`s all about feel for me so the contour comes first with material choice next. :)

Re: Guitar Neck Preferences - Please Vote!

25.5" scale for the tighter feel, Rosewood board for the darker tone, 1.700" nut to suit my playing (I play a lot of acoustic's/resonator's) and the neck profile should be "just" right. Don't like vintage Tele/Strat as a bit too thick (across the palm) nor do I prefer late '50's Gibson as a bit too thin between back of neck and fret board, I get cramps in the hand after 20 minutes playing.
As for bolt-on or set or even straight thru I'll use them all just can the makers send them to me for testing, return is NOT guarenteed. I do have GAS retention.

Re: Guitar Neck Preferences - Please Vote!

my preference is 24.74 scale with extra jumbo frets.

Re: Guitar Neck Preferences - Please Vote!

V shaped necks are nice when your siting down playing your guitar at your house or at the guitar store.
C shaped necks are nice when your standing and playing your guitar becouse its easy to reach all the chords and play leads.
It is a smart idea before you buy any guitar to play it siting and standing up to see how you like the neck profile.
Many a player has loved to sit and play a V shaped neck guitar at the guitar store only to get it home and play it standing up or at a band pratice and discover that most V necks are hard to play standing up. :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

Re: Guitar Neck Preferences - Please Vote!

Maple with a C shape and a 1 5/8 nut and 25.5" scale is my favourite, in a bolt-on.

I also like Ebony fretboards, and rosewood... I'm not HUGE fan of set-necks because they tend to have thickly painted finishes which I generally find annoying and sticky. I am building a Neck-thru guitar, but I'm using a satin finish to keep the stickiness to a minimum.

I also love the Wizard profile, and the neck on my Kramer, it's kind of between a wizard the the above mentioned "C" neck.

Medium to Jumbo frets have become my favourite. I used to like vintage fender type frets, but I find them harder to play on now.

Re: Guitar Neck Preferences - Please Vote!

i like 1 5/8 width, with a scalloped neck, frets that are not too big. I love the idea of new, interesting materials too. I have small hands, so I don't like vintage profiles, or V profiles.
I also like smaller headstocks for balance, like the Ernie Ball. Locking tuners as well.

Re: Guitar Neck Preferences - Please Vote!

The combination of a 25.5" scale and a 1 5/8 nut feels most comfortable to me. I prefer a thin but rounded neck contour.
I like maple for its rigidity and tone. A bolt-on neck is good because it's easy to replace if it breaks.

Re: Guitar Neck Preferences - Please Vote!

I've played strats that sound good, played Gibsons that sound good, the neck joint isn't terribly important to me. I will say that thick necks tend to sound better.... especially on strats. The Jimmie Vaughan neck is awesome.

Re: Guitar Neck Preferences - Please Vote!

The ideal neck for me would be one that is 1960 Les Paul thin -- basically not much more than just a fretboard hanging in space -- when I'm playing single note lines and then automatically expands to baseball bat size when I start playing barre chords.

That choice wasn't listed (I'm shocked!) so I couldn't vote.

Re: Guitar Neck Preferences - Please Vote!

ok.. i need a bit of a fatter neck. satin finish is a must, i need to feel the wood.

i dont have any set necks (yet) but if they are a set neck, they have to have a contoured heel so they feel like neck throughs. yes, i'm anal like that.

if they are bolt ons, the heel has to be narrow, i absolutely HATE fender type heels and i find them realy uncomfortable, thus they need to be scalloped

as for the neck itself, maple. for the fretboard, maple (starting to dislike rosewood, havent tried ebony yet) frets.. depends on the neck, on some tiny ones (Les Paul Custom type) fit good, but for me personaly they need to be big. 6100 type big hehe

Re: Guitar Neck Preferences - Please Vote!

I prefer bolted on necks.
Althought Gibsons are engr-ly glued on necks, bolted on gives you the choice to choose another body or vice-versa. eg Warmoth.com

But still the books say engr-ly glued on is better cuz it doesn't get loose and outta tune
