Guitar Necks

ok so I have this buddy, Really as hard as it is to imagine
so he's got three guitars:

a floyded 80's Japanese Squire
a mexican 80's Squire
and a Valley Arts Samick Strat clone

the Floyded Squire he has refinished and refretted
but he has trouble with the nut
the locking nut just wont lock on the low E
he has even replaced the nut
and thinks the short metric locking screw is stripped
I have told him he would be better off ordering a Carvin neck with locking tuners
it comes with a Tusq-like nut and and with locking tuners and tilt-back head stock
I think he'd be set
this guitar was his #1 for years and he really loves the shape of the neck
but he thinks its a bit heavy

the Mexi Squire was a project he started a few years ago
it is now his main axe (with the trouble with the Floyed one)
he has tricked this one out with two Fender Noiseless and a DP102 on the bridge
a TusqXL nut
it plays wonderfully
but the truss rod is horked
again I think a new neck is in order
and again I suggest the Carvin with Stainless Steel Jumbo frets
its a $40 option and you'll never have to replace them

the Samick is 7/8 clone
and nothing is interchangeable
he like it kinda
but is unhappy with the stock pickups

so what I'm thinkin is he needs a neck
I was thinking Carvin because they would level the frets and dress the fret ends
unlike the stories I hear about Warmoth at almost twice the cost

If I were him I would replace the stripped screw and if that didn't do it, I would replace the nut with a new one and be done with it......
#1 back in bizz with a fully functioning Floyd......OH YA!!!

He's n the third screw
He thinks the female threads are stripped

When he was refinishing it he replaced the nut because of a similar thing

The guitar only has about five hours of playing on it since he finished two years ago

I have not played a Carvin in years so I really can't comment on their current work but the one I played I liked for the tone but didn't care for the neck.

I would say an Allparts neck for a Squire–great neck and not too expensive for a brand new one. I prefer Warmoth and then Musikraft, but for a Squire I would go the Allparts route.

Necks can be a very personal thing.

I've found Squier necks to be some of the most comfortable necks I've ever played on.

Definitely a personal thing...I've never really cared for a Squire neck...but that may be due to my mind tricking me into thinking a Squire is cheaper and not as good...I dunno.

I've seen a couple instances where the locking screw for a particular pair of strings is actually a hair long and needs to be sanded down or else it won't go down far enough to actually lock. I've also seen where people have clearanced the neck itself by drilling a 1mm deep hole directly beneath the screw hole so the screw has a bit more space to go down.

Granted, I've always sanded off the logos, so it doesn't say SQUIER anymore.

replace the whole floyd locking nut & saddles and everything should be good on that axe. if he replaced a part already then he got the wrong one or he did it wrong. new good quality parts shouldnt have issues that quickly.

if the truss rod is broken then its probably not worth fixing, be almost as much as a new neck anyway. i have had a few carvin necks and they are ok. the all maple one had lacquer over the frets which was terribly obnoxious. the maple/ebony one is a little too thin for my taste but a really nice neck. dont really care for either of the headstocks though

More along the lines that Squier themselves misspelled it.

I was showing the girl working for me a Squier and she thought it said "Squeer". Had to laugh at that one.

it was a "more expensive than the cheapest" as I remember
we discussed the merits of getting a good quality one
but which one he actually got, I'm not sure

well he ordered the entire R2 nut and clamps
Screws and all

he had some trouble when he first put it on
it was sitting too "level"
the headstock side was higher than the fretboard side
and he was getting a ring

he may have tilted it too far back
and blocked his screws


oh and thanks for the input on the Carvin necks
he isnt fond of the head stocks either

I, on the other hand, like them
well not the inline ones
but the H33 Pointed 3x3
the reverse version HR33
and the HH Holdsworth 2x4
