+1 Yamahas. Good sounding, solid affordable, however, jbass is my favorite. Thin neck, some bottom, but thin enough that you have to move...pbass tend to encourage roots.
Probably more important us learning right hand. If you play with a pick it's likely you will remain a guitarist... 90% of bass, timing and articulation is in the right hand.
And have fun...I love to riff between the roots..
