Re: Guitar Player Mag: Paul Reed Smith!

That's good to hear. Paul Reed Smith is a true artisan. He's void of all B.S.
He figured out what made Gibson and Fender tick, and he created something that is equal to those 2. People can say all they want about Hamer and Heritage, but he's above those two, and always will be. He's the final part of the trilogy....till you throw Martin into the equation. It's those 4.
Gibson, Fender, Martin, and PRS.

And Taylor. Taylor's probably the most influencial acoustic guitar company right now. They have really changed the way acoustic guitars are assembled and put together...and of course they sound great!

Hamer's cool but not what I'd call innovative...a great guitar for the money (especially purchased used) but basically Hamer builds preexisting Gibson designs. (though the Hamer Artist and Monoco Super Pro are innovative...I guess I take that back! :smack: )

Taylor and PRS have come up with something new and more thier own.

Re: Guitar Player Mag: Paul Reed Smith!

Find the Seymour Duncan ad in that issue. The '90 Custom 24 in the photo is my guitar. You'll see it on the cover of the next Seymour Duncan catalog in a few months.

Re: Guitar Player Mag: Paul Reed Smith!

I want a Singlecut, mostly because they'll fly through the roof in value. Right now, you can get them at a decent price, but soon, they'll soar over $3000. Buy one, if you can.

Re: Guitar Player Mag: Paul Reed Smith!

I remember playing one of the first batch of PRS guitars that came into New Zealand.

At the time, I was a young kid into super-strats, and had probably barely even picked up a Les Paul. I distinctly remember sitting the PRS in my lap and thinking 'this feels weird', but after a few moments I quickly realised I was playing a superior guitar, both in terms of quality and playability.

Despite always holding them in high regard, I never thought of owning one, mainly because of the price and lack of S/H ones floating around my country. Then, one day my soundguy asked me if I wanted to swap an amp head for a custom 22. I've been gigging that guitar ever since, and it's just a superb instrument.

The ehing I like about PRS is the astounding consistency they seem to maintain. I have an 'old factory' one, but if it was broken or stolen I could walk strainght into my local dealer and pick up one that resonates, plays and looks just as good as my one.

I also happen to think that the McCarty Soapbar may well be the best looking guitar ever made. I'm still scheming ways to get the teal black one in my local shop.

Re: Guitar Player Mag: Paul Reed Smith!

I got my copy of the magazine yesterday. It's a pretty good read. Lots of insight.

Re: Guitar Player Mag: Paul Reed Smith!

Just got my copy. Cool stuff about the pots on most modern guitars not cleaning up when you turn down the volume (True IMO). Not much info on pickups except the 513. PRS may have let something slip when he mentions working on the nut with Blutcher (sp?) (Pickup guy at D IIRC). Also no mention of the change in truss rod design (about 92-93) which has had a huge - effect on TONE IMO) Nice mag. Thanks for the heads up Lew!

Re: Guitar Player Mag: Paul Reed Smith!

I've owned 4 PRS guitars since '91 and they are among the finest guitars I've played in 40+ years of playing. The tone, playability, and build quality are first rate and the fact that they allow for both single coil and humbucking sounds makes them perfect for live and studio gigging.

Re: Guitar Player Mag: Paul Reed Smith!

Lew, thanks for the heads up. I have always admired the finish on the PRS axes. I've only played one, though. It played well, but the tone was far too bright for my taste (maple-top anyone?).

I haven't bought a GP mag in years...I guess it's time to change that trend.

Thanks! I was one of GP's first subscribers back in '67. and still have a virtually complete collection starting with #1. But I stopped buying it every month a couple of years ago. I still pick it up if there's something new or interesting but these days it seems like I should be writing for Guitar Player instead of reading it! :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

Re: Guitar Player Mag: Paul Reed Smith!

i bought it to read on my trip last week

was pretty interesting and somewhat GAS inspiring (some of those tops are simply gorgeous)

cynical me wondered how much PRS had to pay for the magazine length advertising

as much as part of me would love to own one, i cant see ever paying that much for a guitar given that i am not a working musician ... if i was a working musician, i'd probably find it hard NOT to own one ...

cheers

Re: Guitar Player Mag: Paul Reed Smith!

My take on this issue was that GP chose PRS at least partially because they didn't approve of the way PRS was singled out by Gibson and the PRS Single Cut outlawed and wanted to help Paul out a little.

There are so many single cutaway Les Paul type guitars still being made that actually look like Les Pauls, yet PRS was the one trashed by Gibson.

I never though the PRS singlecut looked like a Les Paul or was a rip off of the Les Paul design.

I guess Gibson didn't like PRS making a better, more artistic guitar than they were interested in or capable of producing. So Gibson attacked PRS and somehow won!

As if anyone ever bought a PRS singlecut thinking they were buying a Gibson Les Paul.

Totally absurd.

Re: Guitar Player Mag: Paul Reed Smith!

Yeah, I agree about Taylor being a new classic, alongside Gibson, Fender, PRS, and Martin. At this point you can add Mesa to the amp holy trinity of Marshall, Fender, and Vox, also.

I hear a lot of people saying that PRS's don't have as good a tone as Gibsons, but you've got to consider that they aren't the same guitar. PRS makes better sounding pickups than Gibson, IMO, but even those can be changed. You can't compare a Gibson with Duncans to a PRS with stock pickups. You can, however, put Duncans in both, THEN make a fair comparison.

Oh come one.... Just how stupid does Gibson think a person can be?

Yes. Only I am allowed to be stupid. :) And, agreed - Gibson is being extremely punitive and self-serving.

Cool thread.

Cool thread.

I got the mag and have thumbed through it a few times. I've always liked Paul, he seems like a decent guy. He did a few clinics out here at West LA Music and is very approachable and honest.

Mostly I like that he suggests respect for other makers and doesn't mind if you don't buy his guitar. That shows class.

I remember that SD used to make the pickups for his first guitars, back in the 80s.
