Guitar Player Magazine's SFX-03 Review

Re: Guitar Player Magazine's SFX-03 Review

a GP Editor's Pick is a heck of an endorsement

Re: Guitar Player Magazine's SFX-03 Review

I was surprised when I saw one of these behind the counter the other day at Guitar Center. I was even more surprised when I saw that these are made in China!! I want to give one a spin soon.

Re: Guitar Player Magazine's SFX-03 Review

The box is built in China. The tubes are USA-built Milspec Phillips-Sylvanias.

Re: Guitar Player Magazine's SFX-03 Review

How much did this cost ya, Evan? ;)

j/k ... Congrats. I bet this would be cool to put in front of a modeller with the gain set low to add a bit of tube-y feel to the thing.

Re: Guitar Player Magazine's SFX-03 Review

Music123 just emailed me. They won't be receiving shipment from SD until 4/26/06.:yell: :smack: (Feels like there giving me the runaround)

Re: Guitar Player Magazine's SFX-03 Review

No, I don't think they're giving you the runaround. Guitar Center's initial order ate up the first shipment from our factory. There are plenty of units behind this first shipment, but consider this: even though the box is made in China, every single unit gets opened up and put on the test bench here in Santa Barbara. There's around 10 minutes of testing that get applied to each unit.

Why am I telling you this? Because our head testing guy just quit last week to take another job. That's not to say we don't have other testers who are going to take over where he left off, but it's going to have some impact on deliverability. That's why our dealers are quoting those dates.

In the meantime, GC has 'em.

I listened to the sound clip on this site and liked it, but I couldn't see me using it for my main type of music. Does anyone know if it can handle heavy rock like velvet revolver and metal like iron maiden?

this is funny! though i trust GP's reviews more than, say, Guitar World, I always wondered how much advertising $ influenced reviews. I guess it is always safe to distrust a mag that also has full page ads of the very product they review. I'm certainly not accusing SD or GP of anything, but I have seen this practice in other guitar magazines.
And I'm not getting on SD's or GP's case, this is just a general pet peeve of any guitar magazine.

Re: Guitar Player Magazine's SFX-03 Review

Hey Evan....are the tubes you are using similar to the indestructible little EMP proof military tubes that Musical Fidelity uses in their high end audio gear?:fingersx:

Re: Guitar Player Magazine's SFX-03 Review

I'm not sure what Musical Fidelity is using. These tubes are Milspec Phillips-Sylvania 6021s. They're a dual triode.

As for the hints that maybe Seymour Duncan bought the editorial, I can understand your concerns based on some gear-related magazines, but if you know anything about Guitar Player, you know that their advertising and editorial departments are totally separate and there's no influence whatsoever by one on the other. That's just a fact.

Re: Guitar Player Magazine's SFX-03 Review

I think that the Musical Fidelity tube is called the Nu-Vistor. Do you guys have enough of those Syvania tubes to last a good long time? That was the problem that Musical Fidelity had. The tubes are incredibly durable.....something obscene like they will last 10 years even if left on all the time, which is what a lot of stereo guys do, but they are hideously expensive and even more rare, so MF has had to limit production of their gear that uses them, because they include spares with every piece.

I don't rely on opinions or even clips. I just get it, and then I love it or it gets sold. I'll get one soon, then make up my mind. If for some reason I don't need it, what's the worst that can happen....I sell it and lose $15? It looks to be something I'd keep though.

By the way, Evans new Celtic Evan Rude amp looks like a keeper!!!

Re: Guitar Player Magazine's SFX-03 Review

i agree, ive always trusted GP and Keyboard, for that matter, for their well written reviews.
It always amazed me that some gear mags for 'reviews' basically pull the list of specs from the ad copy, and then finsih with some pansy sentence like 'If you are looking for a box that does this, you might just want to consider this box'...I swear, it seems like sometimes the reviewer never even had the product at all.
I always dug GP's shootouts and factory roundtables...good reading there.

Re: Guitar Player Magazine's SFX-03 Review

evan, will there be an international model based on 220v ac?

My feelings exactly!

Problem is, I love mine....and the FD II Mosfet....and the Mesa Boogie Bottle Rocket........:laugh2:

It's definitely a great OD & there will be no problem selling it if you choose to.

There's a guy on The Gear Page dumping his as we speak...looking for a trade though(Lovepedal Eternity, I think):dunno:

That's that very same pedal, with a different power adaptor :)

Re: Guitar Player Magazine's SFX-03 Review

great review - congrats on a great product, evan

the mag that is gettin' on my last nerve is musician's hotline ... evan wrote an article that they didnt even bother to format properly and it had a ton of 'tab damage' to a tone chart evan tried to include that rendered the article essentially unreadable .... kellie has written a few articles too ... seems like the 'editors' just slap together the copy with no pride or professionalism ... jeff bober is a great guy, so i read his column ... they have one series of a guy with unspecified credentials bitching about how hard life on the road is when you get screwed by managers, venues, etc ... and the 'theory' articles are so badly worded and illustrated as to be useless

i flip through the ads, note websites for more product info, read bober's blurb, and recycle it
