Guitar storage/commercial storage units??

Ok..
First, I know that excessive temps can damage a guitar. I try to baby mine. However, when I think about it, for decades guys have toured the world with gear in trailers, vans, etc.. So, Im sure they are more durable than I want to risk. But again, I know its more about prolonged exposure too..
Now, to the meat of my post.. I have gear in a storage facility thats pretty far away. (Ive moved) I pay extra for a climate controlled unit, (though Ive been there sometimes and thats pretty iffy) Anyhow, there are alot of facilities near me that are A) closer and B) ALOT less money. Both climate controlled and non. But, there are alot fewer climate controlled ones. Im in Northern Fla and winters arent brutal, but we do sometimes get some below freezing weather and summers are hot and humid.

Do any of you keep gear in storage? If so, do you climate control or not. If not, ever had any issues??

I definately want to get the gear closer. And I could REALLY benefit from saving some money.. Im struggling to keep up with the rent .

Thanks!

Re: Guitar storage/commercial storage units??

Convert your bed into a loft and keep your gear below it.

Re: Guitar storage/commercial storage units??

You can store them with me free of charge! :D

I would be more worried about leaving the strings on full tension if they are sitting for so long. Ideally, climate controlled would be best and I would definitely be finding something closer if I was in your situation.

Best of luck!

Re: Guitar storage/commercial storage units??

Agreed - Ideally, climate controlled with the strings slacked.

If you have to keep gear in a storage unit start a store

LOL!! At one point a couple years ago I was snapping them up like a shark on a feeding frenzy.. I had an "inventory reduction sale", before we moved and am down by 10 or so..I honestly REALLY wish I could just pick one or two and sell the rest. But now, its like trying to decide which child I want to get rid of. Im hoping that I can start playing more and when I do and find myself reaching for one or two regularly,I cant thin out..

I def need to get rid of a 4x12 cab

I've gone through the same thing...when I got out of college I was buying guitars left and right. I'm down to 2 complete electrics, 1 complete acoustic, and several projects in the works (couple electrics and a vintage acoustic.)

It was hard at first to decide which guitar to let go and while I miss several of them, the two guitars I have right now do everything I need. But what worked for me might not for you–the only sentimental value guitar I own is my dad's 80's Charvel that he ordered the year I was born.

Have you visited the storage facilities nearby? An inside unit would be best IMO.

Re: Guitar storage/commercial storage units??

Havent visited them yet. Im going to soon. Then Im going to have to get the money ahead to pay the current, lease the new one and rent a truck to move the stuff. (its not just gear in there)

Trey, I hear you! And as much as I love having lots of guits, envy you a bit.. I KNOW im not much of a player and at my age and the way my life is, prolly wont be. so wish I could just cut down.. The hard part is, when I sold a bunch before, I sold all the "trophy" axes and stuff. Like my Washburn Wm526. Awesome guitar, but wasnt playing it and keeping it mostly cuz it was rare and special. So I got rid of all those. All of them I have now, I WOULD play regularly if I gigged or had them all in a music room, and Ive asked myself a million times, if I could have only one, which would I choose? Id be satisfied with any of them. Obviously Id like to keep my 1 accoustic, Id like to keep the strat, and if possible a superstrat and a LP type. But deciding which ones between them.....

Re: Guitar storage/commercial storage units??

I was serious about the loft idea. For what you pay for storage for a month or two you could put together a loft and keep everything with you. Then you know it'll be climate controlled.

I appreciate the idea, but I rent the house so, cant make any changes to it that way as far as building. My bed is a huge king with attached headboard and dressers on both sides. And.... I have a wife that would definately veto the idea.. haha

That's why I'm glad I live alone. I can keep my guitars in my living room and nobody says a word lol.

Re: Guitar storage/commercial storage units??

I don't get why ppl say you should store guitars with the strings slackened? The guitar doesn't know if its being played or not, and the guitar(s) you do play regularly, you're going to store with the strings at pitch. A neck can warp if its not kept up to tension, or only kept partly at tension for too long

Re: Guitar storage/commercial storage units??

You'd only need to slack the strings if you believe the guitar would suffer from exposure to some extreme temps. Metal and wood freeze at different rates, so having the string slack would prevent them pulling more on the neck when contracting - at least that's what I'm given to understand. I try to avoid allowing my instruments to get exposed like that for any duration, so I haven't had to test out the theory.

Thats why I keep my spare guitars in a closet in my parent's house haha no extreme temps there

Im pretty happy with my PRS SC245, my Fender MIA strat and my breedlove acoustic. I can cover basically any type of music I can dream of (short of uber tight mega gain stuff). I would like to add maybe 1 more electric to the arsenal.....not sure what it would be though. When I get/want a new guitar, I tend to get rid of one I currently have that I think can go.

Re: Guitar storage/commercial storage units??

Hi, I just thought I might mention you have all the bases covered except a 335 body style. I had to look up the PRS SC245 to be sure...nice. If you get a chance check out the D'Angelico Ex-Dc model. Looks like a super high end 335 and plays great. I have one in natural wood that I love.

This is the idea!! Just make sure tho, if you meet someone, they steal your heart and suck you in, that they also love guitars. or all will change..plus, kids take up space too.. my wife doesnt much like guitars, (so me having one would be ok), she has ocd (so she cant stand anything extra laying around or things not having a perfect place, plus she now has the bigger income in the household (I worked 3 jobs and she went to college), and she has no problem reminding me who pays the rent...
