I love playing Comfortably Numb. The key to getting a convincing Gilmour vibe is to study his bends - something the tab may not capture very clearly. (I think his hands must be made out of gummy bears.) I would also suggest tracking down some live recordings to listen to for ideas, but CN is one song that the band seems to always play in studio form, without any improvisation ever.

Gotta say - these days, I'm all about hitting the Youtube for learning things….

Re: guitar tab for comfortably numb

hi guys,
i take note what all you guys above say, but if i only want the tab for the long version of the song CN, but do not wish to buy the book (the best of pink floyd) where would you guys find the tab sheet for NB long version,

all the best, bluesfloyd.

Re: guitar tab for comfortably numb

I don't understand what you mean by "long version"?

There's the version on the album, tab for which you can find here. I've just read through it and it's 99% accurate - the bits that aren't quite right you'll be able to hear and correct.

And then there are the various live versions. When it's Roger Waters playing, he usually gets the guitarist to go note-for-note from the album. When Gilmour's playing, he uses a few licks from the album version, and a lot of improvisation.

Shameless plug for my own rendition of the second solo. It's the album version, but when I get to the end of that (where the track fades out on the album), I go into improvisation, hopefully in a reasonably convincing impersonation of Gilmour's style.

hi jumble jumble,
first thing, loved the clip of you playing, sounded really good, after you play the first high fret stuff, you go on to play more, that to me is the bit that makes it the long version, then i hear some guys do that thing with the whammy bar, getting that whaling sound going, but like you say its more improvisation after the high fret stuff, big thanks for you time to reply,

Re: guitar tab for comfortably numb

Oh I see. Yeah, just improvise! I suggest watching a lot of different performances of the solo, so you can get a good feel for the kinds of licks that work, and avoid the kind that don't have the Gilmour factor.

For the "waving" effect, I'm pretty sure the guy at Gilmourish.com has done an article describing how to do it.

Re: guitar tab for comfortably numb

hi jumble jumble,
the version that i seem to like, would be from the pluse album, i might of tracked down a dvd that teaches this version, but waiting for a reply from another forum site to ok it will teach the version i want, but plan B would be to study the pulse dvd and learn from that, i can play numb up to the high fret stuff then the fade out, but i feel the solo is only just getting started, and i am ready to learn this next part, i watched you play and just little things you do make your solo stand out, i know a lot of work as gone into that solo,so well done again, but i do like and want that whammy bar whaling sound in my solo one day thats for sure,

all the best, bluesfloyd,
