Re: Guitar Tones You Don't Like, But Others Do

Early SRV live. I listen to alot of that stuff, and it just sucks. Mostly because he hadnt gotten into his 33 amp setup yet, and he didnt know what a damn volume knob was. But later, like when he played Austin City Limits in 89, it was probably the best strat tone I've ever heard.
I'm the other way round (unless we're talking VERY early SRV). I love the first two albums/el mocambo tone, and dislike the multi-amp stuff on 'in step'.
I'll focus on players I like. Everyone knows CC Deville and Kirk Hammet's tones suck.
Tones that don't do it for me:
Early Randy Rhoads. Obviously feeling his way into the tone thing.
Early Vinnie Moore. Classic example of an artist playing lots of notes and not listening to any of them.
Joe Satriani. Something's wrong if every cheesy pedalboard out there has a preset that sounds almost identical to your tone.
Mr Big-era Paul Gilbert. Turn off the harmonizer!
Most Eric Clapton after blind faith. maybe not bad tone, but nothing like he had.
Neal Schon on occasion. Esp. that album with Jan Hammer.
Greg Howe. Loved his early tone, but after the first couple of records he started recording his amps under a blanket. He has the distinction of making his tone sound like it's from an amp modeller before amp modellers existed.
John Petrucci. Yes, you sound EXACTLY like you run a bunch of mesas into a rack.
I was never that impressed with Steve Morse's distorted tone, but he had a great sound live with Deep Purple.
