Guitar Upgrades/Changes Made On 4 Guitars Today

.....and that's a lot of work for me right now with my back and the nerve damage, but sometimes the desire to tinker and finish some projects overrides the pain.

Most of the changes were routine:

2 USA Dean Hardtail's had new Schaller S-Locks installed and the old Schaller locks are in the parts bin. Each of these and their corresponding straps received the new hardware in the Ruthenium finish. It's an outstanding color and my favorite of the new color.

Mary Kay style strat project received the S-Locks in the Vintage Copper color. The rest of the hardware is gold, but is starting to tarnish a bit. I'll be installing an aged mint green guard from Callaham and aged cream covers and knobs to make it look more relic'd. Ayrton has graciously offered to help with fitting the new pickguard as it will need some adjustment. Pickguard soon to be on order. These Vintage Copper S-Locks are a killer color; they look fantastic.

57' RI LP had the most work. I had put Ruthenium S-Locks on it, but the color wasn't quite right. So, it received a Satin Pearl colored set. Much better. It also received a Faber Tone Lock ABR-1 and Faber Locking Lightweight Tailpiece. The guitar didn't "need" this change and I didn't seek it out. I had looked at the Faber stuff, but I wasn't going to drop $200 on the full locking kit. The stock hardware was really good.

A guy I know over at the MLP forum had a set he wasn't using and we worked out a deal for the full set, with 3 sets of spacers to set the tail piece at different heights as needed, that I couldn't pass up. I got both pieces on and they're high quality. The tail piece is even lighter than the Gibson Historic lightweight piece. Didn't expect that. Put it on using the lowest spacer. The locking bridge is very nice though and the locking pieces went on smoothly, but it's heavier than the original Gibson Historic piece.

I top wrapped the guitar too. I do prefer that on LP's as a general rule, but I'm not sold on it with this one. The first thing I need to do is take the spacers off the tail piece, to increase the break angle over the bridge. The strings are too slinky. I probably should have used new strings too, but the set on there wasn't very old. I'll do that once I recover from all of this.

Thanks for reading and have a good weekend.

Cool projects. It inspires me to take care of some stuff. Pics would be cool.

I have a set of his (James) Low Wind/output set, but they were in one of my Hardtail's. The neck pup sounded good, but I had to set it down below the rings to get some semblance of balance with the bridge. The bridge was anemic and weak compared to the neck. No matter how I adjusted the bridge it sounded bad. I'm in the process of sending them back to James. I know he'll get them right.

Let me see if the color of the strap locks will show up in pics.

Re: Guitar Upgrades/Changes Made On 4 Guitars Today

Despite the clarity & openness of really low wind humbuckers, I always prefer a little more sweetness & power at the bridge. James specializes in vintage winds, but some of the ones he does in the upper range of PAF territory are very sweet indeed. I'm sure you'll wind up with something great.

Re: Guitar Upgrades/Changes Made On 4 Guitars Today

I'm sure of it. His Low Output or Low Wind, whatever their name really is, came very highly recommended. I was worried that the bridge would be weak, but James cautioned me not to strictly consider a low output bridge with weak output or sound, so I went with the set as he winds it. The neck sounded wonderful and surprisingly warm and full for being such a low output pickup. I think it is fine. As for the bridge, I think I'll be happier with something in the 8.3k-8.6k range, vs. the 7.4k-7.6k of the bridge I received. Then I won't have to drop the neck pup into the body of the guitar to achieve balance with the bridge, and hopefully the bridge will have some punch, crunch but still be clear and articulate.

I suppose it may turn out that his winding style just doesn't meets my tastes, but I think that's a remote possibility. His work is so highly regarded by many people and great players. He's also a leading authority on PAF's, which not everyone can say. I still want to read the book he authored on PAF'S.

I'll report back on those in a few weeks once it's all sorted. Worst case scenario is they end up in the Trading Post.

Re: Guitar Upgrades/Changes Made On 4 Guitars Today

I have both the production and NOS wire version of the Low Output Set. I found the bridge to be perfect. The neck was too warm for my taste, so I ended up lowering more than I'm use to. My bridge was over wound at 7.9-8.0k. I think you'll end up fine. Goes to show you how individual guitars and ears differ.

Re: Guitar Upgrades/Changes Made On 4 Guitars Today

I love my old Gibson Shaws; they're very low wind, only 7K. Still full and sweet - in the neck slot. Both are paired with more muscular bridges - one with a Brobucker, the other with what James called his Pale Rider: 9.3K with coil offset and a degaussed A5.

I also have a set of his Creme Brulees; they're aptly named. Exceptionally good pickups for a bright guitar.

Re: Guitar Upgrades/Changes Made On 4 Guitars Today

glad you got some projects done! itching to try those new schaller locks. just dont need locks for anything currently and not sure its worth swapping out other locks..

Not to hijack, but what makes the Rewind pups so desirable?? I hadnt heard of em till this thread. Checked out their site.
Sound interesting..

I first heard of them over at the MLP forum. James, the owner of Rewind has spent a lot of time working on real PAF pickups and has even authored a book on the subject. The pickups he winds receive stellar reviews at MLP and other places that I've read. I typically don't stray from SD pickups, but I struck up a conversation with James and his knowledge, along with his willingness to speak to me at length regarding the tone I liked in pickups , in addition to reputation at MLP lead me to take a chance on a set of pickups. At the time I was looking for a couple of double cream SD's on a budget to complete some sets, but he offered to wind me a set of his in double cream at a very generous price.

The only thing(s) I really don't care for in this first set is that the bridge pickup is just a bit underpowered and thin, for my taste. The neck pickup was much better, good tone, but more powerful than the bridge and maybe if I'm being picky, a bit too warm. However, good clarity and sound. I think paired with a bridge that works for me the neck would be just fine.

I've had a lot going on health wise and looking for a job, so I just haven't had time to get them back to him. I have no doubt he will make them right. His pickups have won at least one award and are well regarded by their owners, as is James knowledge of pickups.

That's the short story anyhow.

Re: Guitar Upgrades/Changes Made On 4 Guitars Today

James recommends 550k pots for the neck to counteract some of that warmth. I guess that's why most PAF aficionados look for 550k+ pots for the neck. There would be perfect in a bright guitar. My LP is a bit on the warm side.

Re: Guitar Upgrades/Changes Made On 4 Guitars Today

You are correct. I have a tested 525k pot in the neck & bridge and I'm even using a .015uf cap instead OD the .022uf James recommends.
