sometimes i inadvertently move the guitar volume knob when performing and the tone changes. i have it on volume number 8, not full blast. Do any of you tape the knob down? Any other tricks. I would imagine i would use the tuner stompbox to mute the guitar in between songs.

Re: guitar volume knob

It used to happen to me a lot at the beginning with my strat, I just needed more practice and today I turn the volume at will and still do a lot of palm muting without changing the volume by mistake.

Re: guitar volume knob

Removing the knob is a good way for sure. You could either use stompboxes to mute or install a mini-toggle as well.

Is it a strat? Leave the vol spot empty and just have master vol/ tone on the next two spots.

You could also get a stepped pot as well

^This.
Did this to one of my Strats. Eventually will do it to the other. I can't stand that top pot/knob position. Its right in my way. My only gripe about strats.

Re: guitar volume knob

I do it with my tone knob on my Les Paul, I never turn them down from 10 and don't mess with it. Should really ought to get rid of them.

As for the volume, I turn it down between songs, rarely go on 5-7 to back down for verses, etc. Play hard and loud!

Re: guitar volume knob

Replace them with chicken heads, or some smaller knob that still lets you move them easily when you need.

Re: guitar volume knob

Isn't there a product now that keeps the knob where you put it? I think I remember seeing ads for it, but can't recall what it is. It is something that fits between the pickguard and the knob. I mean, if an electronic solution doesn't help or is too radical.

Re: guitar volume knob

Try not flailing? On a Strat or typical Jackson layout the knob is always "right there" and in the way, but on a Les Paul? How does one even manage to reach the knobs without removing your hand from the bridge? It's not an acoustic or a row boat, after all.

Put some thin washers in between the pot and the pick guard so that the knob is lower and touching the pick guard. The friction will keep it from turning so easily, and your guitar won't look any different.

yup that's what i do, i guesss more practice

Re: guitar volume knob

If you must flail to make it look like you're putting out more effort than is necessary (y'know, for the audience), then at least learn to flail away from the knobs instead of towards them.

Re: guitar volume knob

you can put a red washer from a grolsh bottle top under the knob and it will hold it in place but still allow you to turn it if you really want to
